We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tom Fisk. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tom below.
Hi Tom, thanks for joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
Happiness as an artist is complex and ever-evolving. It’s not a static state but rather a journey shaped by exploration, expression, and purpose. For me, this journey is uniquely shaped by the balance between my two careers: as a photographer and videographer on weekends and a data scientist in healthcare during the week. While these paths may seem worlds apart, they are deeply interconnected, constantly influencing and enriching one another.
Let me take you back to a weekend when these two roles intersected and challenged me. It was a crisp Saturday morning, following a week of analyzing healthcare data that underscored the stark disparities in access to care between rural and urban communities. In my role as a data scientist, I often confront such inequities—uncovering gaps in healthcare delivery and identifying opportunities to bridge them. The work is fulfilling but also sobering, requiring a keen understanding of the human stories behind the numbers.
That morning, I packed my camera and headed to a nearby wildlife area—a place where I often find solace and clarity. The sun was low on the horizon, casting warm, golden light over the landscape. The air was still, except for the occasional rustle of leaves, the call of an eagle in the distance. I began to capture the scene, focusing on the interplay of light and shadow across the landscape, and the intricate patterns in the natural world. With every photo, I felt a sense of connection—not just to the environment around me but also to the themes that resonate through my work.
And yet, juxtaposed with this serene moment was the knowledge I couldn’t shake: the disparities I had analyzed earlier that week. While I stood there capturing the beauty of untouched nature, I couldn’t help but think about how rural communities often embody that same sense of simplicity and resilience, yet lack the healthcare infrastructure that urban populations often take for granted. My creative work frequently explores this kind of duality—the beauty of nature and human resilience, contrasted with the challenges created by societal structures.
As I reviewed the photos later that evening, I found myself reflecting on a familiar question: Wouldn’t it be easier to have a single, “regular” job—one that didn’t pull me in such different directions or ask so much of me emotionally? But as I thought about it, I realized that this duality is precisely what drives me. My work as a data scientist grounds me in purpose, giving me a tangible way to make a positive impact on the world. My creative work, on the other hand, offers me a way to express the emotions, contradictions, and stories I encounter—bridging the gap between logic and feeling, data and humanity.
That weekend reaffirmed something essential about my identity: these two careers aren’t competing forces but complementary ones. Together, they allow me to see and engage with the world in a way that feels complete. Science provides the foundation for change, while art captures its essence and helps others see its importance.
So, do I wonder what it would be like to have a simpler, more predictable path? Occasionally. But I’ve come to embrace the complexity of my journey. It’s in this balance between science and creativity, structure and expression, that I find the greatest fulfillment. I’m not just happy as an artist or as a scientist—I’m happy being both, letting each inform and enhance the other.

Tom, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Tom Fisk, and I am a photographer, videographer, and occasional short filmmaker with a deep passion for capturing the world’s beauty, complexity, and contradictions. My creative journey has been an ongoing exploration of storytelling through visual mediums. While I am not currently “a business”, my work focuses on meaningful collaborations with other artists and supporting production houses with tailored creative solutions for their projects in film, television, and print.
Drawn to the power of visual storytelling—the ability to freeze a moment in time and evoke emotion, spark curiosity, or ignite change—I’ve built a portfolio that reflects this passion. On platforms like Pexels (pexels.com/@tomfisk) and Instagram (@fisk.tom), I share a range of work, from serene landscapes that highlight the beauty of nature to striking urban scenes that tell stories of human impact on the environment. My goal is to showcase the duality of the world around us: the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and the challenges posed by human intervention. This theme is further explored in my award-winning short film Trash Story on YouTube, which blends creativity and commentary to inspire viewers to reflect on the ways we interact with our environment.
Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of working on a variety of projects, from collaborating with fellow creatives on thought-provoking films to partnering with production houses to fulfill specific project needs. Whether it’s contributing to a compelling story for a television segment, capturing dynamic visuals for print, or creating cinematic content for film, my work is rooted in an intention to create something that resonates.
What sets me apart is my dual perspective. As both a creative and a data scientist working in healthcare, I bring a unique lens to my art. My professional experience in analyzing and addressing disparities in healthcare gives me a deeper appreciation for stories of resilience, equity, and humanity. This perspective often informs my creative work, where I strive to blend emotional depth with visual artistry.
For potential clients, collaborators, or followers, I want you to know that my work is about more than just creating visuals—it’s about crafting stories that matter. Whether we’re working together on a small artistic collaboration or a large-scale production, my approach is rooted in authenticity, curiosity, and a commitment to excellence. I believe in the power of creative partnerships and am always eager to collaborate with others who share a passion for meaningful storytelling.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about me and my work—I look forward to connecting with those who feel inspired by what they see.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. My creative journey is deeply rooted in a mission to explore and share the duality of the world around us—the awe-inspiring beauty of nature and the challenges posed by human intervention. Through photography, videography, and filmmaking, I aim to tell stories that evoke emotion, spark curiosity, and inspire reflection.

Alright – so here’s a fun one. What do you think about NFTs?
While I appreciate the innovation behind NFTs and their ability to bring attention to digital art, I don’t believe they are a persuasive way of sharing the true nature of art. For me, art is about connection—creating an emotional bond or sparking a sense of wonder in the viewer. NFTs, by their nature, are largely transactional. They prioritize ownership and scarcity over the deeper, more personal experience of engaging with a piece of art.
