We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Ellie Gall. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Ellie below.
Alright, Ellie thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
When I was 20, I packed my bags and moved from Australia to the US, away from my family and friends with no job lined up. I was thrown right into a stereotypical actress in LA life; multiple auditions a week all over town that you would get the night before and have to memorise. I joined the most outlandish classes I could find, from movement to voice, suddenly my Thursday mornings were spent dancing around a room on Melrose Avenue in an attempt to “take up space” in a movement class. I had thrown myself into one of the most competitive industry towns in the world and I was flailing about trying to make my break. And then 6 months in, I got a self tape for the prequel for a beloved sci-fi franchise called “Stargate”, where I got the chance to audition for the lead role. Two days later, I had booked that role and within a week we were on set filming. This role has been a huge jumping off point for my career in the US and legitimised my potential as an artist in Los Angeles.
Ellie, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
For as long as I can remember, I always wanted to be an actress, and at the age of 11 I finally convinced my parents to let me sign up for an agency. After a few TVC commercials and informercials, I booked my first TV show at 14, reenacting the murder of Sian Kingi for “Crime Scene Investigation.” From there it took a few more years of auditioning until I booked my first “break” in Australia on the critically acclaimed show, “Puberty Blues”. This show helped me to land roles in Australia on projects such as the Disney Channels “Mind Over Maddie” and “A Place to Call Home”, which led me to secure a US manager. From therei booked US projects, such as Lifetimes “A Midsummers Nightmare,” a Shakespeare anthology pilot that unfortunately didn’t get picked up to series, a guest role on Starz “Ash vs evil Dead,” and my most notable project to date, MGMs “Stargate Origins” where I played the lead Catherine Langford. My most recent work is on Australian longest running Drama series “Home and Away” where I play Nerida Mullins, which has been a dream come true. I am lucky to have had a long career, with many ups and downs, but my constancy has landed me roles over the years and I am so grateful for my amazing team that has supported me through this journey. I am excited to keep exploring these dark characters, and move onto working on bigger projects.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I believe that story telling is healing, and as an actor I get to be a part of the story telling journey.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding part of acting for me is providing entertainment for people, and getting to be a small part of their lives. Stories can provide comfort to people, tech them a lesson about the world or themselves, or even just distract you from the everyday stresses of life, and I am grateful to play a small part in that.
