Today we’d like to introduce you to Samar Johnson.
Hi Samar, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am a proud “failed academic.” I left my PhD program in enthomusicology after completing all of my coursework that left me in the wake of serious mental, physical and emotional burnout. As much as I wanted to be designed for that trajectory, the fact of the matter is it was too limiting in its scope. I am a shadow holder. I am someone who walks the sliver distance between the land and sea. I meet people where they are at and do my best to mirror their unique and divine glory. As much as I wanted academia to be a modality for me, I couldn’t bend to their rules without almost breaking.
The summer I left I knew that my next step had to be grounded in my truth and the encouragement of others to live theirs out loud as well. So, Ensoulment Doula was born. Using astrology, cartomancy, and the trauma informed somatic practice called Focalizing, I help others re-member their way back to themselves.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have never travelled a smooth road. The path to myself has been a long, winding, and at times, lonely. But, if I knew it would bring me to this point, I would take it every single time.
One of the most difficult aspects of the re-membering process after self-abandonment is you can no longer use social ideals to guide your way. It means pulling your mind out of the imagination of the oppressor and relearning your creative process. This will inevitability lead you to a deep desire to want to trust your intuition once more. Then comes the remembering of your body’s language that provides the understanding of your personal gnosis.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I specialize in supporting others through their personal underworld journeys as they ensoul themselves. One of the aspects of the Ensoulment Quintessence is that I believe our woundings contain our most powerful medicine for the self and the other. Wounds are things that we have collected along the way in living to please the oppressor. They are not self-inflicted. In fact, I believe there is profound intelligence in self-abandonment. Too often, it is to keep ourselves and others safe. It is a way we have been taught to “love.” But, it is the reflection upon these woundings that leads to a deeper personal gnosis. “The wound is where the light comes in and the shadow pours out.” It is through the exploration of archetypes in tarot, mythology, and astrology that we see ourselves mirrored. We see that the divine is in us and us in the divine. This personal liberation, I believe, leads others in communities to their liberation. They see others shining with their own personal Sun and want to discover their own.
I have a couple of longer term containers. Letting Chiron Sing is a 12 month container where people have the option of exploring a different wound each month in community. Those in the container are provided with reflections, meditations, a journal for reflection and more. There are also guest speakers that come to share their medicine every quarter. Ensouling (which opens in June) is a small container where for the first 4 months, they are in conversation with themselves to rediscover their intuition, develop their personal lore, and initiate the process of removing masks. The last 2 months are in small group where they witness one another using somatic practices to further embodiment and integration.
I also have 1:1 embodied natal chart containers, a podcast, and weekly short Love Letters on youtube. Oh, and a monthly newletter that is a psychic download called “Alchemic Oracle.”
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I am hoping it grows to be more authentic and less driven by the capitalist money making model. I am seeing more people using different pricing tiers, free offerings, scholarships, and trades as ways to give their medicine to others.
Pricing:
- Economically Secure – full price plus extra to cover a scholarship
- Full Price – the current full price of the offering
- Marginalized Identity Experiencing Financial Hardship – the price with scholarship included for those who are systemically excluded from most healing journeys due to financial disparities
- Severe Economic Hardship – free (I hope to offer more than one spot a month as the client base continues to grow)
