We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Cheryl L. Tubbs. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Cheryl L. below.
Cheryl, appreciate you joining us today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I would say I knew I wanted to pursue portrait photography seriously a couple of years ago. I was taking some photos of a family friend and seeing their reaction once they saw themselves; their joy and gratitude stirred up a feeling in me that I hadn’t felt in a long time-happiness. Not the happiness in that I took a great photo, but the fact that my friend felt beautiful in that space and I was able to see that in them-it really just made me feel happiness, peace, and satisfaction. I knew at that moment that I not only wanted my clients to feel that joy, but that I also thrived from their happiness and wanted to feel that every time I picked up my camera!

Cheryl L. , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Cheryl L. Tubbs and I own Around The Way Photography. I’m a Portrait Photographer in Houston, Texas. At Around The Way Photography, the goal is to ensure the clients needs and wants are met with great customer service, attention to detail, and great quality. I want my clients to feel like family; I want what’s best for you and I’ll go above and beyond to ensure you love your family photos, engagement photos, birthday photos, or your just because photos!
I want future clients to know that I’m here for you in whatever creative way you need me to be. I want them to feel comfortable collaborating and expressing their ideas for their lasting memories.

Learning and unlearning are both critical parts of growth – can you share a story of a time when you had to unlearn a lesson?
I had to unlearn that it’s not healthy for me to compare myself with others and that what and how I’m navigating my creative journey is right FOR ME!
I felt that I had to ALWAYS post, advertise, or put my name out there to have business coming in; it was draining. It really took a toll on me creatively and mentally, and most importantly It wasn’t fun or making me happy.
After a conversation with my husband, a good family friend, and lots of prayer, I decided to do what was best for me and what would be best for my current and future clients.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a creative for me would be finally being comfortable identifying myself as a creative and what that means for me. It allows me to be my whole self and also invite others into my world and hope they take away something that can benefit them as well.
