We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Renata Lutz. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Renata below.
Hi Renata, thanks for joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you identified some of your key partners/vendors and how you made those relationships work?
Maternity Shoot, Redefined is the culmination of one of the most meaningful collaborations of my career—a partnership that perfectly aligns with my vision, values, and dedication to celebrating motherhood. This unique experience was created in collaboration with Sanne Hamers of Atelier Preserve, merging the artistry of luxury maternity photography with the timeless beauty of 3D sculpture. Together, we reimagined what a maternity session could be, crafting a service that not only honors the strength and beauty of motherhood but preserves it as an exquisite, tangible heirloom.
I met Sanne at an industry event, and from the moment we started talking, we both realized we had a shared vision for celebrating motherhood in a way that felt timeless and deeply personal. Her work creating 3D sculptures that immortalize the beauty of pregnancy immediately resonated with my approach to luxury maternity photography. We both believed in offering mothers more than just keepsakes—we wanted to create experiences that honor their strength and beauty in truly unique and transformative ways.
That initial conversation quickly evolved into brainstorming what we could create together, and the idea for “Maternity Shoot, Redefined” was born. Striking a deal with Sanne felt natural because our values aligned so well—we both prioritize excellence, client care, and creating something meaningful. It was less about negotiating terms and more about nurturing a shared dream of elevating how mothers see themselves and how they preserve this time in their life. Open communication and a genuine excitement for the project made the process smooth and collaborative.
I believe Sanne decided to collaborate with me because of our shared commitment to creating extraordinary client experiences and how naturally our visions aligned. Together, we brought complementary strengths to the table—her artistic craftsmanship and my focus on creating luxury photographic experiences—and we were equally passionate about elevating our industry standards.
I feel like the foundation of any successful partnership lies in shared values, mission, and vision. These elements create the alignment necessary for a collaboration to thrive. Here are a few key pieces of advice for establishing this strong foundation:
Align on Values Early
Start by discussing what matters most to you and your potential partner. Do you share a commitment to quality, client care, or innovation? Values are the guiding principles behind every decision, so finding common ground here ensures you approach challenges and opportunities with the same mindset.
Define a Shared Mission
Your mission is the “why” behind your work. Collaborators who share a purpose are more likely to remain motivated and invested in the project. Whether it’s elevating an industry standard or delivering transformative client experiences, ensure your mission resonates with both parties.
Create a Unified Vision
A partnership needs a clear vision for the future. What are you trying to build or achieve together? Spend time creating a roadmap that outlines your goals and ensures you’re working toward the same outcome. A unified vision helps avoid miscommunication and keeps the collaboration moving forward.
Communicate Openly
Even when you share values, mission, and vision, regular and open communication is key to maintaining alignment. Check in often, address challenges collaboratively, and celebrate wins together. Strong communication reinforces trust and partnership longevity.
Complement Each Other’s Strengths
Shared values, mission, and vision set the foundation, but complementary skills make a partnership effective. Look for partners whose expertise enhances yours, creating a dynamic that’s greater than the sum of its parts.

Renata, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Renata Lutz, and I am the owner and creative mind behind The Portrait Mama, a luxury maternity and newborn photography studio based in beautiful La Jolla, California. For over a decade, I’ve been dedicated to celebrating the beauty, strength, and grace of motherhood through timeless, high-end portraits. My work isn’t just about capturing moments—it’s about creating heirlooms that tell the story of this extraordinary chapter in a family’s life.
My journey into photography is deeply personal and rooted in my own experience as a mother. After facing ovarian cancer and navigating the heartbreak of pregnancy loss, becoming a mom was a dream I wasn’t sure I’d achieve. When I finally welcomed my first son, it changed everything. I decided to leave my scientific career behind and embrace motherhood wholeheartedly, and that’s when my passion for photography became a full-time business. I wanted to preserve the magical moments of my own children’s lives, and that passion evolved into a career dedicated to helping other families do the same.
At The Portrait Mama, I offer a range of services designed to meet mothers where they are in their journey. My sessions include maternity, newborn, and motherhood photography, all delivered with a full-service luxury experience. From planning consultations to carefully curated outfits and props, to creating stunning printed products like wall art and heirloom albums, every detail is designed to provide a seamless, personalized experience for my clients.
What sets The Portrait Mama apart is not just the artistry of the photos but the intention behind every session. As a mother of two little boys, I know how challenging it can be to get in front of the camera, especially during the whirlwind of motherhood. That’s why I’ve made it my mission to help women feel confident, beautiful, and empowered. My sessions are a celebration of who they are as mothers and as individuals, and my goal is to make them feel seen, valued, and cherished.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
Building an audience on social media takes strategy, intention, and a genuine connection with your followers. For me, Instagram has been the cornerstone of my social media growth, and one thing I’ve learned is that you need a deep understanding of the platform you want to grow on. Instagram isn’t just about posting—it’s about using all the features available, as each serves a different purpose. Posts help establish expertise and showcase your work, stories offer a behind-the-scenes, authentic glimpse into your process, and reels are an incredible tool for reach and engagement, allowing you to connect with new audiences in a dynamic way.
What many entrepreneurs get wrong is focusing too much on posting content without being social. Social media is about interaction and nurturing your audience. Responding to comments, engaging with followers’ posts, and starting conversations are just as important as the content you’re sharing. It’s not enough to show up—you need to build relationships.
The key is to strike a balance: position yourself as an expert in your field while remaining empathetic and relatable to your followers. Share your knowledge, but also let your audience see the real person behind the brand. For example, I connect deeply with my audience by sharing my own motherhood journey alongside my work as a photographer. This duality—expertise combined with relatability—helps build trust and fosters a sense of community.
For those just starting, my advice is simple: focus on understanding your platform, and prioritizing genuine engagement. Your audience isn’t just looking for content—they’re looking for connection. When you lead with value and authenticity, growth follows naturally.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
Building a strong reputation in my market has been a combination of showcasing my expertise and fostering genuine connections—both online and in person. Establishing a virtual presence has been key to positioning myself as an expert in maternity and newborn photography. Through consistent, high-quality content that reflects my unique style and knowledge, I’ve been able to demonstrate my expertise to a wide audience. Sharing insights has also helped build trust and authority in my field.
Equally important has been building community and connection through networking. Attending local events, collaborating with like-minded businesses, and hosting educational workshops have allowed me to form meaningful relationships within my community and industry. These connections are not just transactional—they’re about building a support system and becoming a trusted resource for others.
It’s the combination of excellence in your craft and the ability to connect with people in a way that feels authentic and meaningful. It’s about being visible, being approachable, and consistently delivering on the promises you make to your clients and your peers.
