We recently connected with Ayesha Moore and have shared our conversation below.
Ayesha, appreciate you joining us today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
I actually came up with the idea for Major Minors back in 2017. I was working in the children’s club at a gym when I thought of the name and the concept, which was initially sports based. My vision continued to grow as I gained more experience in other places. I managed a children’s recreational gym, volunteered at numerous children places, and went back to school. Once I graduated, a moved to Durham and created Major Minors.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have always enjoyed working with children and knew I wanted a career based on working with them. I have a B.A. in psychology from ECU, a B.A. in Spanish from NCCU, and a M.S. in human development and family science from ECU. Major Minors in a reflection of all that I have learned from my studies and other hands-on experiences. One thing that sets us apart from others is our focus on play as a foundation for learning. For example, we spend more time applying Spanish to games than learning from a worksheet. Studies show people retain information better when they can actively apply it through play. I am proud of the growth we’ve had during our first year, and I’m looking forward to continuous growth in the future.

Any fun sales or marketing stories?
A lot of marketing is based on our foundation of play. Last year, we had an event called Kickball for Kids. We had a kickball game and gave out free shirts and pizza. It was an opportunity for parents to try us out for free and for a lot of the kids, it was their first time playing kickball. We also took time to play on the playground and ran some races at the end. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I have constantly had to assess and adjust in life. Looking back now, I can see how the changes were happening for me and not to me. By this I mean, as much as I have always enjoyed learning Spanish, there would be no Spanish session if I hadn’t gone back to school specifically to learn Spanish. I wouldn’t have the confidence to start a business if I hadn’t managed one from the ground up and saw what it takes. The foundation of play wouldn’t be as strong if I hadn’t gotten my masters and studied the importance of play for children. At the time, it felt like life was constantly changing and I didn’t really know what I was suppose to be doing. It all makes sense now; there was a bigger purpose for me and I believe that is reflected in Major Minors.
