We recently connected with Dr. Chenobia C. Webster-Hill and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Chenobia, thanks for joining us today. Was there a moment in your career that meaningfully altered your trajectory? If so, we’d love to hear the backstory.
Absolutely, there was a defining moment in my professional career that changed everything for me. As a two-time teen parent and a recipient of social services, I found myself navigating a system that often felt impersonal and overwhelming. Being on welfare and witnessing firsthand how the system impacted my life and my children’s lives gave me a clear choice: I could either remain a part of the system or work to fix it.
That moment of clarity ignited my passion for social work. I pursued becoming a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and eventually became a social work educator. I wanted to guide other social workers on how to truly be of service—to move beyond the bureaucracy and connect with the humanity of the people we serve.
That journey taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of cultural humility in this work. My personal experiences allowed me to see gaps in the system and to advocate for real, meaningful change. It’s why I pour my heart into mentoring the next generation of social workers—they carry the power to transform lives and dismantle inequities within the very systems I once depended on.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
One story that defines my resilience is rooted in my journey as a two-time teen parent navigating the overwhelming challenges of relying on social services. I wasn’t just fighting to survive—I was fighting to create a future for my children. The system I had to rely on often felt cold, dismissive, and dehumanizing, and there were countless moments when I questioned whether I could ever rise above the labels society had placed on me.
But I refused to let those circumstances define me. I made a choice: I could either stay trapped in the system or rise up and work to transform it. That fire fueled me to push forward, step by step, despite the doubts, the fear, and the overwhelming obstacles. I went back to school, earned my Doctorate degree, and became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I didn’t stop there—I created The Licensure Doc to help others on their journeys, ensuring they could overcome their challenges and step into their greatness.
My journey demanded everything I had—the resilience to keep going when the odds were stacked against me, the courage to silence self-doubt, and the strength to believe in my power. Today, I stand tall in every room, knowing I belong because I’ve earned my place through sheer determination and grit. My story is my strength, and it has made me the advocate, educator, and force for change I am today.

We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
A lesson I had to unlearn was the idea that I needed to shrink myself or prove my worth to belong in certain spaces. For a long time, I carried the weight of imposter syndrome, questioning whether I was good enough to stand in the rooms I found myself in. The backstory is rooted in my journey as a teen parent and someone who once relied on social services. While those experiences fueled my passion for social work, they also planted seeds of doubt about whether I truly deserved to be where I was.
Over time, I realized that my lived experiences weren’t limitations—they were my superpower. They gave me a unique perspective, one that allowed me to connect with people in meaningful ways and understand systemic challenges on a deeper level. I learned to shine in every room, confident in my abilities and secure in the knowledge that I belong.
Unlearning that self-doubt has been transformational. It’s a reminder that we are often our toughest critics, but when we embrace our strengths and trust our journey, we find that we’ve always been more than enough. My greatest pride comes from the unwavering support of my husband, Corey, and our four incredible children—Tierney, Gabriel, Reed, and Harlem—who constantly inspire and push me to achieve greatness.
