Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Brown. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jason, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my current one, In Living Color. This project explores my perception of Black culture while also highlighting the diverse influences that have shaped my cultural identity. Growing up with connections to Puerto Rican culture, Appalachian traditions, and a touch of Pennsylvania Dutch influence has given me a distinct lens through which I view Blackness. This blend of cultural influences provides a stable foundation that empowers me to deeply engage with and celebrate Black culture while delving into aspects of our identity that are often overlooked or undervalued.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
First and foremost, I am a follower of Jesus Christ! Without Him, I wouldn’t be where I am today. I’ve been a gospel musician for about 10 years and am currently finishing my Bachelor’s degree in Music Education. Recently, I’ve discovered a passion for photography and have embraced it as a way to express my love for culture, intellect, and people through the arts. While music remains my most familiar form of expression, I’ve found a way to pair it with film photography to create visual experiences that I pray evoke both emotion and curiosity.
I’m deeply inspired by the intersection of culture and the arts, as I believe exploring these connections creates opportunities for those often dismissed by society to share their expertise in meaningful ways. My goal is to provide people with a space to recognize the value of their own knowledge and acknowledge the wisdom they carry—wisdom that is often gained through lived experiences rather than traditional academic pathways.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
Take the time to appreciate an artist’s work. Whether it’s in fashion, photography, cinema, music, or any other creative medium, recognizing the effort and passion that goes into creating art is important. And one of the simplest ways to do this, in my opinion, is by supporting local artists and businesses. Get to know the people behind the work. Allow their creations to become a part of your life, just as they do. This simple connection creates a deeper appreciation—not only for the artists but also for their customers and the community as a whole.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
Art is for YOU. I used to believe my work needed to be palatable for everyone, and that mindset often led me to dilute my ideas. But your art is your art, and those who are meant to connect with it will. I’ve learned that experience is the best teacher. To bring my ideas to life, I first had to live them—I had to become a character in the story I wanted to tell. Once I embraced that, the Lord began to bless me with endless ideas, visions for incredible projects, and meaningful collaborations.
