We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Nadja Cox. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Nadja below.
Nadja, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s start with what makes profitability in your industry a challenge – what would you say is the biggest challenge?
The biggest challenge in the photography industry when it comes to becoming profitable is that people often overlook small businesses with fewer followers or a smaller social presence. Instead, they pay more for someone based on their name or brand. While this approach works in some entrepreneurial fields, photography should be more about talent and finding the right person to bring a vision to life, rather than focusing on follower count or notoriety.
Another significant challenge is staying true to your art form to reap the benefits. It’s a time-consuming process, but it’s ultimately worthwhile. Paying yourself what you’re worth is also difficult, as money doesn’t come quickly. Many creatives face underpayment as they try to build clients. The waiting period to see profit can be long, but staying true to yourself ensures longevity—something that’s priceless.
Nadja, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Nadja, and I am a Maryland native, born and raised in the DMV area. I am a photographer, videographer, and graphic designer. I’ve always been passionate about the creative world since I was a child, with interests ranging from museums and books to painting and crafts.
Professionally, I began my journey as a photographer in 2019 when I started my business, Photogen.Nicc Photography. Initially, I focused solely on photography services, but over time, I expanded my offerings to include graphic design, video creation, and editing.
Looking back, are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had known the power of an elevator pitch earlier. While having a social presence and strong digital branding is important, nothing compares to a simple, impactful introduction paired with a business card. It demonstrates seriousness, professionalism, and leaves a lasting impression.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I want my work to speak for itself—both before I enter a room and long after I leave this earth. I strive for my work to leave such a lasting impression that it’s impossible not to recognize a Photogen.Nicc photo, video edit, or graphic. My goal is for my unique style to become a staple in the community.
