We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Brittany Peters a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Brittany, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
Our company, The Moons Dream, was born from a deep desire to create something meaningful not only for others but for my daughter and me. As a single mom, it’s important for me to demonstrate to my daughter the power of living with intention, gratitude, and hard work. These values are the foundation of our business and the way we approach our lives every day.
Together, we create intentional candles that symbolize the energy we want to bring into our world. But it’s not just about the candles—it’s about the life we’re building. We host workshops where we teach others about manifesting, the law of attraction, and how to incorporate these principles into their lives. Through these workshops, we share our personal journey of using these tools to create a brighter, more fulfilled future.
The mission behind The Moons Dream is to empower others to manifest their own dreams while instilling a sense of gratitude and purpose into everything they do. As we work towards building a better future, we hope that by living with intention, we can inspire others to do the same. Our slogan, “Thank you for dreaming,” reflects our belief that dreams are powerful, and gratitude is the key to unlocking them.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Alongside my 8-year-old daughter, we run The Moons Dream, an intentional candle business with a mission that’s very close to our hearts. Our journey into this industry actually started by accident. We originally wanted to create special, heartfelt gifts for our friends and family who were going through transitions in life. We felt they needed something deeply meaningful and intentional, something that could help them navigate those moments with positivity and support. Our special interest has always included metaphysical crystals and healing herbs, so we decided to include those in our creations as well, adding an extra layer of intention and energy to each candle. From that desire, we began crafting candles that carried a personal touch and intention behind them.
As we got deeper into the process, we realized we wanted to make something all-natural and non-toxic—not just for our own family, but so others could feel comfortable having them around their loved ones, pets, and anyone with sensitivities. We’ve always believed in creating products that reflect our values of living with intention and gratitude, while also being mindful of the environment and the well-being of everyone in the home.
Now, through The Moons Dream, we create intentional candles that aren’t just products but symbols of manifestation and positive energy. Each candle is crafted with care, designed to bring warmth, love, and uplifting energy to our customers’ lives. Along with our candles, we also host workshops where we teach about manifesting, the law of attraction, and how to incorporate these principles into your own life. These workshops are a personal reflection of our own journey, as we actively use these tools to attract a brighter future together.
What sets The Moons Dream apart is the intention behind everything we do. We’re not just selling candles; we’re offering a way for people to connect more deeply with their goals, their dreams, and the energy they wish to bring into their lives. We believe that living intentionally, with gratitude and purpose, can truly transform our everyday experiences, and we want to inspire others to live that way, too.
What I’m most proud of is the ability to do something I love that positively and directly affects others. Running this business with my daughter has been such a rewarding experience—seeing her grow in this journey, learning the values of hard work and intention, and knowing that what we’re creating is making a difference in people’s lives.
One of the things I want potential clients and followers to know about The Moons Dream is that we are more than a candle company. We’re a community built on the belief that dreams, when combined with gratitude and intention, can become a reality. We’re here to offer more than just products—we’re offering inspiration, a sense of connection, and tools to help you manifest the life you’ve always desired.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
One of the moments that truly illustrates our resilience comes from the early days of starting The Moons Dream. We were just beginning to craft our candles with the intention of creating meaningful gifts for our friends and family. But, like many new ventures, we ran into some significant challenges. In the beginning, we were using only beeswax for our candles, and we were so excited about the natural, eco-friendly aspect. However, the candles just weren’t burning properly. The wooden wicks we had chosen weren’t working well with the beeswax, and worse, the candles had almost no fragrance at all.
It was incredibly frustrating, especially since we were working with limited space in our two-bedroom apartment and a tight budget. We had no extra resources or room to store materials, and every failed batch felt like a setback. But instead of giving up, we saw it as an opportunity to learn and grow. We had to completely revamp our recipe and go back to square one.
After a lot of trial and error, we decided to add soy wax into the mix. This was a game-changer, but it meant we had to start testing from scratch. We spent weeks experimenting with different wax blends, wicks, and fragrance oils to get the right balance. It was a slow process, but we didn’t let the setbacks stop us. Every failure taught us something new, and over time, we perfected a recipe that not only burned beautifully but also carried the fragrance we wanted.
That experience really showed me the value of persistence and creativity. We could have given up when things didn’t go as planned, but we chose to stay focused on our mission. The struggle became a part of our story, and eventually, it led to a product we were proud of—a product that not only met our high standards but also reflected the love and intention we were putting into everything we did.
What I’m most proud of is that despite starting with so little—limited space, low income, and a lot of unknowns—we were able to create a business that positively impacts others. Running The Moons Dream with my daughter has been a beautiful journey of resilience, and we’re so grateful to be able to share our candles and message of intention with the world.
That’s the spirit of The Moons Dream: resilience, growth, and the belief that every challenge is just another opportunity to create something even better.
Can you talk to us about how you funded your business?
When we first started The Moons Dream, funding was one of our biggest hurdles. As a single mom with limited income, I didn’t have access to large investments or savings to pour into the business. Everything had to be done very carefully and intentionally. The initial capital we needed came from a combination of small, personal sacrifices and a deep commitment to making our dream a reality.
I started by learning everything I could through “YouTube University” and buying supplies from Amazon to get us started. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was enough to begin. I focused on creating high-quality candles, despite having little knowledge of the craft. With every new video, article, and experiment, my skills grew along with the business. Over time, I reinvested every penny we made back into improving our products, upgrading our equipment, and expanding our knowledge.
In addition to selling personal items, I also set up a very tight budget. I knew that with limited resources, I couldn’t afford to make any mistakes. I started small, purchasing only the essential ingredients and supplies, and focused on creating products that reflected our values of intention and gratitude. Every penny had to be spent wisely, and I was careful to reinvest any money we made back into the business for growth.
We did everything ourselves in the beginning—learning to make candles, handling the marketing, packing orders, and shipping. It was a lot of work, but we were driven by our passion and vision for the business. Little by little, we made it happen. Every day was a new opportunity to learn, grow, and improve. As I gained more knowledge, our business grew, and with it, my confidence in running it. It wasn’t easy, and there were plenty of challenges along the way, but we kept moving forward, bit by bit.
My advice to anyone who wants to start their own business is: don’t wait for the perfect moment—do it now! You’ve got one life, so what are you afraid of? Failing? Good! That means you tried, and every failure is just one step closer to figuring it out. I never had all the answers when I started, but I learned as I went, and that’s the most important part. Don’t let fear or uncertainty hold you back—take the leap, and trust that the pieces will fall into place as you go.
Looking back, I’m proud of how resourceful and determined we were in the beginning. Starting a business without a large financial cushion was incredibly challenging, but it taught me the value of hard work, patience, and the importance of reinvesting in what you believe in. The initial capital didn’t come from a big loan or outside investment—it came from a deep, personal commitment to turning our dream into something real.
