We were lucky to catch up with Brenda Garcia recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Brenda thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
I attended the PA Latina Convention last year in Lancaster. Upon my arrival, I realized there were so many Latinos in that area and I asked myself why isn’t there something similar in Pittsburgh that brings us all together if Pittsburgh is bigger than Lancaster? Shortly after the convention, I did some research on local community groups and none were catered to Latina women. So I said, why not. I created a Facebook and Instagram page and announced my first event – Hot Girl Walk. The worst that could happen is that my sisters, aunts and cousins show up. To my surprise, 85 Latina women showed up to our first event.

Brenda, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Brenda Garcia. I am the founder of Latinas en Pittsburgh. In the past, I’ve worked with local nonprofits and immigrations firms, so I’ve always had a passion for helping and being in community. Latinas en Pittsburgh is a community group that focuses on friendships, wellness, culture and community. We host events every month from socials, to painting classes, yoga, hikes and more! This group initially began when I attended the PA Latina Convention in Lancaster PA last year. I thought ‘why not’ create something similar in Pittsburgh?

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
My goal and mission that drives my creative journey is to turn this group into a growing nonprofit. Something women in the area can find s safe space in. I think seeing the group succeed and hearing the feedback from all of the women who have attended events, is what drives me to keep pushing forward. Latina women are known to be social, have friendships, be creative and live in community. That part seemed lacking in Pittsburgh and I am happy to help create this safe space and really unite us all.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I initially started to build our social media following by word of mouth and by paying for ads on Instagram with the first few posts, it was a quick way to be recognized. I also customized the area I wanted the video ad to circulate in and within a few months I was at almost a thousand followers.
