Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Amy Doslich. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Amy, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
I started my author journey after I already had 2 daughters. One of my daughters had a pink bunny that she carried around with her everywhere, and I thought it would be the best thing if I could make her a book that had her and her favorite bunny in it. I’ve always liked drawing, so I watched some YouTube videos, and I bought an iPad, and I told my husband I was going to try to make a children’s book. I had no idea what I was getting myself into at the time, but it unlocked a creative side of me that I hadn’t used in a long time, and I truly enjoyed exploring that side of me again. But I do wish I had started this whole journey earlier. I would have had a lot more time to devote to the process without managing two small kids along with a full time job. That being said, I would have been missing the driving force as to why I was really doing it because my kids wouldn’t have been born yet. So it’s almost as if it happened exactly when it needed to happen.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’m a children’s book author and illustrator, known for the Hannah Banana and Mary Berry series. This series was inspired by my own two daughters, Hannah and Mary, and brings to life their adventures. There are currently 6 books in the series, and I can’t wait to publish more. Here is a short description for each book:
– The Unbelievable Adventures of Hannah Banana and Pinky – an imaginative story about a young girl who goes on an adventure with her favorite stuffed animal
– Hannah Banana and the Addition of Mary Berry – adding a new baby to the family told from a toddler’s perspective
– Sneaky Pinky – A fun search and find story about a stuffed pink bunny who isn’t lost but is hiding
– Little Girls Love Big – A Valentine’s Day story about showing love to others
– Seeking Snowball – Another search and find story, but this time it’s for the family dog who got out
– STEM Day – Hannah’s school is hosting STEM Day, and all the kid get to learn about some fascinating STEM careers
My business revolves around creating fun children’s books that spark imagination and foster a love for reading in young minds. In addition to books, I produce related content on platforms like YouTube, where I share family-friendly reviews and a really amazing segment called Kids Ask Authors Answer. This segment allows kids to read the guest author’s book (there is always a free option to do so), and then the kids send in questions they would like to ask the author. We then have the author answer the questions LIVE, and the author has no idea what the questions will be, which makes it incredibly entertaining. It’s been one of the highlights of my business so far, as I think it has great potential to get kids more engaged in reading.
All of my stories are deeply rooted in real-life experiences with my daughters, and I think that helps me give my books an authentic and heartfelt quality. I love engaging directly with readers (usually their parents) through social media, and I feel like I have a community who are personally connected to me, my characters, and the stories. I’d love to connect with more readers as well, so if you’d like to connect, you can find me as @amyd_mom_author on basically every social media platform out there.
My goal for doing everything I do, is to bring joy, spark conversations about reading, and create lasting memories for families including my own.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most important aspect of being a creative is using my mind in a new way. It’s amazing how being on this adventure has really stretched my mind to work, and I love it! Surprisingly, I even love the marketing aspect of the job. I’m always thinking of new ways of how to showcase my work, and even more than showing my work, I love trying to help others in the field. That’s why I created the Mom’s Best Reads Awards this year. I read over 178 children’s books written by indie authors this year, and I ranked them, and I published a list of my top 10. Since I’m reading so many other people’s books, I thought it would be a great opportunity to really spread the word for those that were at the top of the list.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had looked at ANY resources about publishing a book before I did it. But I’m not a planner. I’m a set my mind to it kind of person, and I just do it. Since publishing my first book though, not a day goes by where I don’t watch a YouTube video or read an article about how to try to improve in some way. I am literally always learning and trying to get better as an author/business woman. I would say YouTube is my greatest resource. You literally can find a video on pretty much anything that you want to learn about. For children’s books in particular I found both Eevi Jones and April Cox very helpful.
