We recently connected with Lily Wachuku and have shared our conversation below.
Lily, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Let’s talk legacy – what sort of legacy do you hope to build?
I hope to leave a legacy of hope, determination, and positive empowerment. When I started my organization (livelifethegirlway.com) at the age of 13 ,five years ago, I had the sole goal of inspiring and empowering girls globally to reach their highest potential. Since then, I have worked to create content that helps to show the many ways that women are achieving greatness and breaking glass ceilings and focuses on building confidence and positive self image. I have also been blessed to fundraise in order to provide girls globally the support that they deserve to pursue their positive goals and dreams, such as my 2020-2021 “Fuel Her Dreams” fundraiser that raised $3,005 to pay for a year of education for 17 Malawian girls. I hope that this will be the legacy of Livelifethegirlway.com, a legacy of taking steps towards achieving positive goals and dreams and a legacy of knowing one’s own self-worth.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My name is Lily Wachuku. I am a teenage girl dedicated to making a positive difference in the world, a life-long learner, an extremely positive and energetic spirit, a friend to girls everywhere, a girl that cares about the confidence and success of girls everywhere, a person working to leave the world a little better than I found it, and a Content Creator in the Girls Empowerment Space and a Motivational Speaker. I started Live Life The Girl Way, a web-based Girls Empowerment Organization which can be accessed at livelifethegirlway.com , in 2018 to empower and encourage girls globally to achieve all of their goals and dreams, to be confident in themselves and their abilities, and to never limit their positive opportunities in life. Since then I have recently expanded Live Life The Girl Way to a Podcast and Twitter page to reach even more girls. I have been so blessed to work with amazing people and organizations that are doing what they can to leave the world better than they found it. I plan to continue the work of livelifethegirlway.com and do all that I can to empower and encourage girls globally by supporting them in the journey to achieving their goals and dreams. I believe that every girl can Dream, Succeed, and Achieve; Live Life The Girl Way!

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Being a teenager has definitely caused me to experience some adversity due to my age. My young age can make it harder for people to take me seriously sometimes, so I have had to learn how to be as professional as possible. I’ve also experienced a few technical struggles! Being a teenage Girls’ Empowerment Content Creator and Motivational Speaker, I had to learn professional skills quickly. I had to learn technical skills like how to write a proper email, how to pitch your ideas to others, how to properly attend business meetings, and how to stay firm in my beliefs even when I’m talking to people that are much older than I am. I have been so blessed to have support from others that have gone before me and have given me advice about how to be a young professional. It took some time to keep going after getting several rejections along the way, but as I kept going I was able to get better and work harder toward making positive change.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
My first major pivot actually occurred when I first started my organization. I was looking for a way to make positive change in the world and had no clue where to start. I saw problems in the world such as world hunger, climate change, and gender inequality and I wanted to fix them. Ambitiously, I set out to resolve all of them and ended up realizing that by trying to focus on every area no real change was being made. From that point on I decided to explore what I was most passionate about. When I realized that I was drawn to empowering and encouraging girls to achieve all of their positive goals and dreams, I decided to pursue that passion, and shortly after, my organization Live Life The Girl Way (livelifethegirlway.com) was officially titled and ready to pursue a clear mission. That pivot was definitely the most important one in my organization’s history thus far, and one that I am certainly glad occurred!
