We were lucky to catch up with Paul Allen recently and have shared our conversation below.
PAUL, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with a story that highlights an important way in which your brand diverges from the industry standard.
I think the most significant difference our practice has versus the rest of the financial planning/investment industry is our company culture. Wealth Strategies Partners’ culture is built around four cornerstones. However, two of them make us different. First, our team is committed to the female investor. Our practice is a place where the female investor feels heard, empowered, and her values honored. The financial industry is so male-centric – from the advisors, to the folks that run Wall Street, to the products available to investors. Female investors have been totally underserved. Two thirds of my leadership team is female, so we are very passionate about making this industry wrong a right.
Secondly, Wealth Strategies Partners is committed to providing a white glove, Ritz Carlton customer experience. Studies show that the number one reason financial advisors get fired is because of lack of customer service and communication with clients. We are obsessed with our clients receiving the best customer experience they have ever had working with a financial planning team. Our has a common understanding that Wealth Strategies Partners is a customer service company that just happens to do financial planning.

PAUL, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I became interested in the financial industry as a 10-year-old child when my grandmother gifted me shares of Coca Cola stock. When most kids were reading the newspaper comics, I was scanning the business page for stock quotes. So, I give all the credit to my grandmother!
I have been doing this for 27 years. I started my own company 11 years ago because I saw a huge gap in the industry. In my opinion, there was a lack of focus on helping clients with total financial planning. Total financial planning involves investments, taxes, estate planning, health care directives, asset titling, among many other things. Most firms focus on investment planning, and they do a pretty good job at it, yet they forget about the rest of the financial planning areas. Wealth Strategies Partners is different because we help our families in all the areas of financial planning, not just one. As CEO of the company what makes me the proudest is that we are able to help our families in so many different areas of their lives.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
When dealing with one’s finances, all you have is your reputation. We talk about always, always, always doing the right thing for our clients. That means always putting the client first and not worrying too much about the rest. I have found throughout my career that if you do the right thing for your client, the money will take care of itself.
How do you keep your team’s morale high?
Keeping high morale is crucial. Another cornerstone of Wealth Strategies Partners’ culture is that our employees are like family. Just like a regular family, we must communicate with each other…even when it is hard. We must support each other, and we have incredibly high expectations for one another. I believe that my role is to put each employee in a position where they can maximize their ability and love what they do.
My advice to every business owner is to start with the culture and make sure it’s something your employees can believe in and articulate. It is awfully difficult to have good morale regarding the direction of the firm if your employees are not aligned with the direction of the culture.
