We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Christy Gish a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Christy, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about your team building process? How did you recruit and train your team and knowing what you know now would you have done anything differently?
When I first started my hiring process, I just brought on a friend that i worked with before. I loved every minute of that because I knew we vibed well together. When it was time for her to move on, it was sad, but, ultimately I was happy for her doing what was best for her business. From then on, I hired people that I did not know, but got a good vibe from. My hiring process now involves my interviewees meeting the team before I decide whether or not to bring them on board. I like to make sure everyone will get along, since we all have such a great relationship.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I have been in the beauty industry for almost 23 years. I loved (almost) every minute of it! I started cosmetology school my senior year in high school, so I walked across the stage at my high school graduation with my cosmetology license in hand. It was there that I learned that I love being a listening ear for people while making people feel good about themselves. Nowadays, my business still makes people feel good about themselves, but thru many services like: hair, nails, tanning, sauna, massage and permanent makeup! Many of these services are not offered anywhere in the area except for at Salon and Spa C!

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think our salon not being one of the ones that are focused on getting the people in out quickly has definitely elevated us above others. We focus on the person in our chair and really listening to them and giving them what they want and what’s best for their hair. We value quality over quantity.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Word of mouth is huge. We have a referral program where we incentivize the guest to bring in friends/family/coworkers. We also do a lot of cross promoting. People who come in for hair will get a massage or nails or facials too. Social media is a big factor as well. We post our work and discounts on there, and the clients find us that way. And finally, just getting all guests on a regular schedule with their self care and rebooking them at their appointments.
