We recently connected with Luis Cruz and have shared our conversation below.
Luis, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Do you wish you had waited to pursue your creative career or do you wish you had started sooner?
When I think about a question like this I always think to myself what would my like look like if I started sooner. The question that wonder a pond my head are “would I be where I am today with my career? and or would I be even better then I am today?”. I started my passion and career for color guard my sophomore year of high school back in 2019 , I attended Cherokee high school located in Canton, Georgia. Through beginning stage of me starting this journey I was in foster care so which ment life was a lot different for me then everyone that I went to school with. When I had started my journey I was able to pick up a flag and start working on the simple tosses and warm up techniques I was self learning the spring semester of my freshman year when schools were shut down due to covid. Starting sooner would have been much more easier for me because most of my friends were on the team and I could’ve had my friends teach me more then just the simple basics and being able to learn a little more trickery tosses and flag work. I’d say the only thing that would change would be more advanced level and being more confident when I do tosses I can do tricks with them such as spinning underneath them or rolling to catch the flag on the ground.

Luis, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Luis Cruz. I’m 20 years old, I was born in Marietta, Georgia. I grew up in a small town called Canton, Georgia, where I lived with My mother and brothers. I graduated from Cherokee High School, located in Canton, Georgia. Where I was involved in Marching Band, concert band, color guard and Winter guard. That where it all began my sophomore year of high school winter guard season. I began to fall for this passion back when I attended a high school football game where I watched my oldest cousin perform durning halftime. I remember like it was yesterday where I was asking all the questions like “what do they people do with the flags what that called?” All of these questions just kept coming out of my mouth and then I finally said I want to do color guard when I get to high school. Sophomore year came around and I was on weapon line where I was spinning not only flag but rifle as well. That where I received my first rifle solo for winter guard.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
The only goal that is driving my mindset to my journey is receiving as much feedback on how to make my self better.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One most rewarding aspect is being able to show off the creative mindset in my life, and being able to show off what I can do.
