We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Avyana Chapman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Avyana thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Alright, so one thing we think people don’t talk about nearly enough is investments – either time or money. What’s one of the best or worst investments you’ve made and what did you learned from the experience?
The best investment I’ve made so far has been putting my time, energy, and passion into creating my own business and brand. While I truly enjoyed my time working in the tech industry and corporate America, I learned some tough lessons along the way. No matter how dedicated you are or how much hard work you put in, you’re often viewed as just another number in a larger system. When budgets tighten or priorities shift, all that effort can suddenly feel futile when it leads to separation from the company.
That realization was a wake-up call for me. I wanted something more stable—not in the sense of reliability but in the sense of ownership and control. I wanted to build something that truly belonged to me. Starting my own business hasn’t always been smooth sailing, but it’s incredibly fulfilling to know that my success is tied to my own decisions, creativity, and perseverance.
This journey has taught me that while working for someone else can provide stability, creating something of your own offers freedom, purpose, and the chance to make a lasting impact. It’s a tradeoff I’d make again in a heartbeat.
Avyana, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients has been word-of-mouth referrals. When people know you’re doing good work and have experienced it firsthand, they’re more likely to recommend you to others. This makes it essential to always put your best foot forward, ensuring every client interaction reflects your commitment to excellence and professionalism.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Unpopular opinion: A massive social media following isn’t the golden ticket for success—quality matters more than quantity.
As a boutique publicist, my goal has always been to ensure that the right people—journalists, media professionals, and decision-makers—are engaging with my content. I’ve built my audience strategically by focusing on connections that drive impact for my clients, rather than chasing arbitrary follower milestones. Yes, having a solid social presence can help attract new business, but the truth is, not every brand or professional needs 10K+ followers.
For those starting out, my advice is to prioritize relevance over reach. Who do you actually need to connect with to achieve your goals? Create valuable, authentic content that speaks directly to that audience and fosters meaningful engagement. Vanity metrics like follower counts and likes are nice, but they won’t matter if your audience can’t help move the needle for your business or career.
