We were lucky to catch up with Lucille Coleman recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Lucille, thanks for joining us today. Day to day the world can seem like a tough place, but there’s also so much kindness in the world and we think talking about that kindness helps spread it and make the world a nicer, kinder place. Can you share a story of a time when someone did something really kind for you?
This moment made me take a second look at myself and appreciate who I was. I worked in Florida at the OCCD for about 6 months. When I decided to leave, I was floored to walk into a room to a surprise party for me leaving. To hear the things being said in the room about me and it was genuine was a turning point for me. This was huge for me because I realized that I did matter and offered something and it was valued. Sometimes you take the biggest chance in your life and it pays off. I was not there long, but I remain friends with the people who I worked with. I took a chance on myself and that experience taught me so much about myself. Stepping outside of my comfort zone and being okay with who I was. As I type this a friend from Florida is texting me to see how I like the weather. Its freezing I tell her, but I smile because she was thinking about me. I am funny, sensitive, emotional, a time bomb waiting to go off, I care too much and I don’t know how to mind my own business sometimes, okay maybe too often. I say all this to say is we matter and often we do not give ourselves enough grace or the ability to know why or how we matter. Do not be afraid to tap into who you are and be okay with it.

Lucille, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Well, I am a retiree, but again working full time presently with an employment agency. I am slowly trying to work my businesses, but I have been working since the age of 14 and I guess it is a slow process. I am grateful though to have skills that are useable. I started crafting I will say about 15 years ago, maybe sooner. I began with the Cricuit and thought maybe this would be a good side hustle, I was not consistent. I purchased a lot of Avon, so my Representative at the time suggested I begin selling and I did. I still buy more than I sell, but its okay. I believe in the products I use. This was the same for Paparazzi Accessories and Mia Bella Candles. I am an Independent Consultant for all three Brands. I am slowly coming to the realization that if I use the products and believe and enjoy them, it is okay to talk about them with strangers and share my enthusiasm. It is a huge transition to work for yourself and learning what works for you and how to work for yourself. I take 5 pieces of jewelry with me each day, a catalog and a candle. Somebody is going to hear about one of my businesses, or somebody may just receive a gift one day.
I am generous and I love to share with people, but I also want you to become a client and enjoy my passions. I provide a unique experience by mere personality alone. I try to think outside of the box and just give a fun experience at a Pop up, Home show, or Live Stream. I do not take myself so serious and often I crack myself up. I am ready to be the full time independent consultant. It is time I get out of my own way.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I will be honest, I was against social media in the beginning, but when you begin to meet people and talk about your brand you give them your social media information. Full transparency is that my social media page has about 100 followers and I realized that people do not know who I am or what I offer unless I let them know. When someone compliments me on my jewelry it opens the door for me to introduce myself, share my social media information and each time I do that I become more comfortable with speaking with people. I often hand out free jewelry with my social media and contact information. I recently heard back from a cold call if you will about being a vendor in an establishment, so consistency, follow-up and just talking to people will help your confidence and your business.
My advice would be to start a social media page and do not be afraid to post or go live, With each post of live you do, you grow and learn. Enjoy what you do, do not make it difficult.

Can you tell us about what’s worked well for you in terms of growing your clientele?
My most effective strategy has been to talk about what I do, as well as wear it and use the products as well. Talk, talk, talk about your business. People do not know what you do unless you tell them, engage, engage, engage. I am still learning to engage. Someone will say oh I like your necklace or you smell good and I will just say thank you, instead of saying oh this is…….. Engage, engage, engage.
