We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Grant Merritt a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Grant, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The most meaningful project I’ve worked on is my children’s book, “A Puppy’s Tale.” It’s inspired by my dog, Achilles, who passed away in May 2024 after being by my side for over thirteen years. He wasn’t just a pet—he was my best friend and had a profound impact on my life.
Writing this book was my way of honoring his memory and sharing the joy and life lessons he brought into my world. The process of creating “A Puppy’s Tale” allowed me to reflect on the bond we shared and how he shaped my perspective on love, patience, and loyalty.
The book, beautifully illustrated by Elena Ciolacu, is set to be released in the spring of 2025, and I’m excited to share it with the world. It’s a project filled with heart, and I hope it inspires readers to cherish the relationships they have, not just with their pets, but with those they love.

Grant, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a writer and actor based in Los Angeles, originally from Texas. Storytelling has always been a cornerstone of my life, whether it’s through writing or performing. My creative journey has been about exploring different ways to connect with people, evoke emotions, and inspire meaningful reflection.
As an actor, I bring stories to life on screen and stage. Acting has taught me the importance of empathy and stepping into someone else’s shoes—a perspective that has also shaped my writing. Whether I’m crafting a character or a story, my focus is always on connection and authenticity.
What sets me apart is my ability to merge personal experience with universal themes. My work, whether in writing or acting, is rooted in a genuine desire to inspire and comfort others, offering a reminder of the beauty in everyday life and relationships.
I’m most proud of the courage it took to pursue my creative passions and to put a piece of my heart into the world with “A Puppy’s Tale.” I hope that through my work, I can encourage others to reflect on their own connections, celebrate their unique stories, and find joy in the little things that make life extraordinary.
If there’s one thing I’d like people to know, it’s that my goal is to create stories that resonate, whether it’s a heartfelt book or a performance that leaves a lasting impression.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
or me, the most rewarding aspect of being an artist and creative is the ability to connect with people on an emotional level. Whether through writing or acting, I love creating moments that resonate and inspire others. It’s incredibly fulfilling to know that something I’ve created—a story, a performance, or even a single line—can spark joy, reflection, or understanding in someone else.
With my children’s book, “A Puppy’s Tale”, the reward is deeply personal. It’s knowing that Achilles’ story, and the love we shared, might remind someone of their own cherished memories or encourage them to appreciate the bonds they have in their lives. Being able to take something so meaningful to me and turn it into something that others can experience and relate to is a privilege I don’t take lightly.
Art is about connection, and there’s nothing more rewarding than hearing that your work has made someone laugh, cry, or feel understood. It’s a reminder that no matter where we come from or what we’ve been through, we share so much as human beings. That’s what keeps me inspired as an artist—to continue creating work that brings people together and reminds us of our shared humanity.

We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
As an actor, resilience is something you build over time, especially when dealing with rejection. Auditions can be tough—not because you weren’t good enough, but because the decision might have nothing to do with your performance. You could be too tall, too short, too handsome, not handsome enough, or even remind the casting director of someone they’d rather forget, like their ex-husband.
Early on, it was hard not to take rejection personally. But I’ve learned that it’s not always about me—it’s about factors I can’t control. That shift in perspective has been vital. You have to show up, give your best, and then let go of the outcome. It’s not easy, but resilience comes from knowing that every “no” brings you closer to the right “yes.”
