We were lucky to catch up with Nicole Gil recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Nicole thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Are you happier as a business owner? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job?
Being a small business owner comes with a unique set of challenges that often demand resilience, adaptability, and an unrelenting commitment to the work. Unlike traditional jobs where the end of the day signifies a stopping point, small business ownership comes with the reality that the work is never truly complete. There is always something more to do—whether it’s refining marketing strategies, managing staff, analyzing finances, or finding ways to grow and improve. The to-do list is endless, and the weight of responsibility can feel overwhelming.
One of the most pressing hardships is the financial risk inherent in running a small business. You often invest significant personal funds or take on debt to build and maintain the business, knowing there are no guarantees of success. These risks are compounded by external factors entirely beyond your control. A wildfire, a global pandemic like Covid-19, or other unforeseen events can disrupt operations overnight, leaving you scrambling to adapt. Revenue streams may dry up, yet the expenses—rent, utilities, payroll—keep piling up.
The responsibility of being an employer adds another layer of stress. Regardless of whether a class fills or an event succeeds, you are on the hook to pay your employees. Their livelihoods depend on you, and this obligation persists even during lean times. Balancing the needs of your staff with the harsh realities of inconsistent cash flow can be emotionally and financially draining.
Despite these challenges, small business owners persevere. They are driven by a passion for their work, a deep sense of purpose, and the belief that their efforts make a meaningful impact on their community. Yet, the road is far from easy, and the sacrifices required are not for the faint of heart.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
**Nicole Gil – Bio**
Hi, I’m Nicole Gil, and dance has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My journey into the dance industry started with a simple passion for movement and expression. I fell in love with the way dance brings people together, transcending language and cultural barriers. Over the years, that love turned into a calling, and I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to sharing the joy and transformative power of dance with others.
At Dancer University, the studio I’m proud to lead in Los Angeles, we specialize in salsa and bachata classes that cater to everyone, from absolute beginners to advanced dancers. Beyond just teaching steps, we create an experience—a place where you can learn, connect, and grow both as a dancer and as an individual. We also offer private lessons, workshops, and community events to ensure that everyone finds their rhythm and feels part of our vibrant dance family.
What sets Dancer University apart is our commitment to inclusivity, community, and quality instruction. We’re not just teaching dance; we’re building a supportive space where people feel welcomed, encouraged, and celebrated for their progress, no matter their starting point. Our instructors bring not only expertise but also a genuine passion for helping each student achieve their goals, whether it’s mastering a routine or simply gaining confidence on the dance floor.
We’re also proud to organize the greatest number of dance events in Los Angeles, creating countless opportunities for our community to come together, practice their skills, and celebrate the joy of movement. Our social nights provide a vibrant calendar of events that keeps the energy alive and the dance floors buzzing.
For me, dance is more than movement—it’s about connection, empowerment, and joy. At Dancer University, I strive to share that vision with every student who walks through our doors. Whether you’re here to explore a new hobby, challenge yourself, or meet like-minded people, we’re here to help you find your rhythm and embrace the magic of dance.

How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I believe my reputation in the dance market was built on a foundation of consistency, approachability, and genuine engagement with the dance community. From the very beginning, I’ve made it a priority to be more than just a business owner or instructor—I’ve been an active and friendly participant in the vibrant world of dance.
Showing up consistently, whether it’s at social dances, events, or workshops, has allowed me to build meaningful relationships with others in the community. It’s not just about being present but about being approachable, supportive, and genuinely interested in connecting with people. I’ve always believed that kindness and encouragement can leave a lasting impression, and I strive to create an environment where dancers of all levels feel welcome and valued.
By maintaining this presence over time, I’ve earned trust and credibility, not only as a professional but also as someone who truly cares about the growth and success of others. Whether through my work at Dancer University or through my involvement in broader community events, my focus has always been on contributing positively to the culture and fostering a sense of unity.
Ultimately, it’s the relationships I’ve built and the genuine passion I’ve brought to the table that have helped solidify my reputation. In the dance world, authenticity and connection speak louder than anything else, and I’m grateful to have grown alongside such an inspiring community.

Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my social media audience through a combination of consistency, visually captivating content, and a commitment to providing value with free tutorials. Consistency was key—I made it a priority to post regularly, keeping my audience engaged and looking forward to new content. This steady presence helped me establish a reliable connection with my followers and ensured my content stayed fresh in their minds.
Beautiful, high-quality videos played a significant role in attracting attention and standing out. From good lighting to attractive editing, the videos were designed to create an inspiring visual experience that people would want to share and return to.
Finally, offering free tutorials was my way of giving back to the community and making dance accessible to everyone, regardless of their circumstances. These tutorials provided real value, allowing followers to learn something new while connecting with my teaching style. It also fostered a sense of trust and appreciation, as people saw that I was genuinely invested in helping them grow.
By combining these elements, I was able to build an audience that is not only engaged but also deeply connected to my vision and passion for dance.
