Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Joseph Raymond. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Joseph , thanks for joining us today. Are you able to earn a full-time living from your creative work? If so, can you walk us through your journey and how you made it happen?
Started working in a makeshift art studio AFTER work all day from 10pm-1:am creating art to sell until 4 years into it and multiple art shows later my sales from art exceeded my regular job. I then decided to go full time artist and I’ve never looked back!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m Joseph Raymond, a successful abstract artist specializing in large scale works with texture, movement and interest!
Into my 11th year as an artist, I’ve sold thousands of works through galleries, shows, exhibits, booths and fairs and well as operating my own gallery since March 2020.
I’m passionate about helping to share my story of ‘living your passion & dream’ of doing what you love coupled with hard work.
The term ‘Starving Artist’ is a negative term that I’ve chosen to defy through authentic, heartfelt art that people love and have a connection to as well as cultivating relationships-rather than hardselling a product.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
Taking the plunge/ leap of faith from self employment to full-time artist was scary but worth the risk!
God has been there every step of the way!
Don’t discount the role of Faith to be successful!
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
Understanding that not everyone will love or connect with your art and being ok with that is very freeing!
I’ve had people laugh in my face at my ‘high prices’ not thinking anyone would pay it, only to be informed that 2 of the 4 in the series were already sold. Changed the whole perspective of the viewer!
Understanding also that because a piece of art hasn’t yet sold doesn’t necessarily mean it’s not a great piece of art. There isimply hasn’t been the right set of eyes on it!
