We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Keith Corona. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Keith below.
Alright, Keith thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?
It has been everything but a smooth road. The business behind the music has caused me to lose friends, I lost both a partner in rhyme as well as an investor to drug addiction, I met various aspiring artists which I wanted to help out and they didn’t believe in themselves enough. The business end of the music journey can be discouraging to many starving artists.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I started recording freestyle cassette tapes with neighborhood friends which later developed into songwriting. I released my first low budget album at 17 years old while attending high school. I spent the ten years that followed recording random music with fellow hip hop lovers struggling to find my sound. In 2013, I felt ready both musically and financially so I recorded a collaborative album with Starvin Arden and started filming and releasing our first music videos. Because of the content, our popularity grew quickly amongst the active ATX hip hop community and the anticipation for a solo album grew as well. 2015 my debut solo album “Live From 78745” released and opportunities such as being an official SXSW performing artist, performing and speaking at University of Texas Social Justice Action Coalition’s Conversations About Race poetry showcase and guest speaker in Bavu Blake’s 8th grade classroom at Decker Middle School presented themselves. In 2017 I moved south to my family’s native land of Michoacan in southern Mexico. I linked with various aspiring hip hop artists in the small town and surrounding areas where I lived and put together another collaborative effort titled “Barrio Ausente” showcasing local talent released in 2020. A second solo album release and Spanish debut titled “:Coronando” is also available on digital platforms
I’m a songwriter/recording artist. I specialize in hip hop music and am known for being a bilingual rapper that has released both music in English as well as Spanish. I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve been able to relocate to Mexico and develop a following here as well… What sets me apart from others is I have experienced life in two countries and have done more than blend well I’ve thrived on both areas. Those experiences transcend through the music and my writings and the realties that I share are identifiable to many.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
Causing emotion through lyrics and giving identifiable content to the public is the most rewarding part of music to me
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Not many believed in me but thankfully there were key people in my journey. I’ve had mentors from the beginning til present time. JK, Will Hustle and Dok Holiday all contributed logs to the fire that burned inside me to want to make and release music. Support has been there just as long. Recap, Everett, Cuttamuzik, Chukk White, Trampia, Tosin, Lil J, Dirtbag, Richard Henry, Clova, Mak Man, ET Tattoo, NV, and Luis Hernandez all played key roles in helping develop my brand.
