We recently connected with Skylar Hunter and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Skylar thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your creative career?
I recently left my job as a cashier due to my being in a toxic work environment. During my time at a grocery store, I witnessed customers regularly project their anger and other frustrations onto me and other coworkers for matters outside of our control. Additionally, I had many negative encounters with one manager in particular who was known for purposely making work experiences more difficult for certain coworkers due to personal vendettas. As it is commonly known, “misery loves company.” These experiences as a collective have taught me the importance of taking accountability for my own happiness and the direction of my life moving forward. It is not healthy or beneficial to blame others for your misfortune rather than using your gifts to change your circumstances. For this reason, I try to live everyday intentionally, creating both the career and life I want for myself.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I regularly create self improvement based content on Tiktok and Instagram. In my videos, I focus on the experiences I have had within my life, as well the lessons these moments have taught me. I also occasionally create videos surrounding fashion and design. Throughout my journey on social media, I have been most proud of how my content creation has allowed me to productively process my life experiences. I hope to continue growing as an individual and continue helping others along their self love journeys.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
At an earlier time in my life, I settled for less than I deserved and allowed others to treat me any sort of way. During this period, I did not know my worth or think very highly of myself. Unfortunately, I harbored much resentment towards the world around me. Luckily, I stumbled across self improvement content and gained so many valuable new lessons. Most importantly, how you treat yourself remains a blueprint for how you want others to treat you. Additionally, it is not fair to project your frustration towards your own circumstances onto things and people outside of you. First and foremost, your happiness and wellbeing are up to you and only you.
How did you build your audience on social media?
My journey to building a social media presence involved and still includes a lot of trial and error. At the beginning of my career, I knew little about video editing and how to use it to your advantage to accommodate short attention spans. I also knew fairly little regarding my own unique style of content creation. In simple terms, these are valuable lessons in content creating I have learned along the way:
1. People have short attention spans, get to the point!
2. A lot of people you know personally will not support you. DO NOT allow this to discourage you from finding your target audience.
3. Don’t be afraid to try different speaking and editing styles.
4. Remember, not everything has to be brought to the internet. Keep at least some aspects of yourself private.
5. Don’t be afraid to rebrand, growth and change is normal.
6. Most popular videos fall into the categories of being relatable, entertaining, or relevant.
7. Be your most authentic self. This will help you stay true to your art and build genuine community.
8. Know your worth.
