We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Karina Moises a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Karina, thanks for joining us today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
I started BEAUTOLOGY LAB because I struggled with my own health challenges where my gut and immune system would react to toxins present in our environment, food, and personal care products. For years my body chronically presented inflammatory disease, gastrointestinal infection, chronic bloating, skin rashes, and fatigue.
This journey led me to approach my health from the inside out. As I started to clean up my diet, change my personal care products and my environmental surroundings I couldn’t find clean skincare products that would help detoxify my body from the outside in so I set out to create them.
My need turned into my purpose to bring health and wellness to skincare. Today, BEAUTOLOGY LAB’s mission is to create everyday, multi-tasking products that stimulate autophagy, our body’s natural detoxification process, in order to detoxify skin at the cellular level.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My career background is in the Advertising and Tech sector where I learned the world of marketing technology and the importance of utilizing and measuring the data that’s out there to help inform business decisions. After 12 years in that space, I decided to pivot and dive into entrepreneurship first by consulting and helping others in their businesses and then I finally came to the realization that I wanted to start something of my own.
I thought long and hard about my own pain points and health and wellness was at the forefront of what I felt passionate about. After struggling with my own health challenges since I was young, I knew there was much more to healthcare than the practices that Western medicine offers. There was an intuitive knowing that the meeting of Eastern and Western medicines is the most whole solution we could experience to date. Long story short, I set out to focus on creating clean skincare products that would help detoxify my body from the outside in with a foundation in nature with a focus on science.
BEAUTOLOGY LAB is a clean-clinical skincare company that is passionate and committed to using the latest biohacking advances in health, wellness and modern science to create multi-tasking products that stimulate autophagy, the body’s natural detoxification process, in order to repair and regenerate damaged and deteriorated skin.

Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
We do manufacture our own products. Since we have a unique formulation principle around stimulating autophagy, we create our own formulas and partner with different cosmetic chemists and labs that bring our vision to life in the form of products that create a beautiful sensorial experience and are simultaneously efficacious.
Finding the right lab partners wasn’t an easy feat, however. Manufacturers and chemists have their own practices and ways of working which many times don’t align with yours. Since our clean standard is obsessive – meaning if ingredients are at all questionably toxic we don’t formulate with them, this reduces the pool of eligible manufacturers we can work with. However, we’re grateful to have the partners we’re working with that understand our vision and have the same standards we do.
In my experience, I would stress the importance of vetting your manufacturers well, don’t apologize for your standards, and hold them accountable because in the end your product is going to reflect all of that. Curating a partner that’s right for you from the beginning will save you time and mishaps down the road.
Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Beauty is a crowded space and clean beauty is heading in that direction as well. As a small brand, we’ve tested many avenues for growth and found it most difficult to cut through the noise on social media. Customer acquisition cost, or CAC, is real, expensive at the moment, and not always an option for a bootstrapped brand.
So through trial and error we’ve found more support and success in partnering with retailers, hotels, and spas that believe in our brand and products and already have the audiences and services to offer our products through. Having the buy-in from partners that want to see you grow and also benefit from your growth is a recipe that is working well for us right now.
