We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kelly Her a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Kelly thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
I think any artist can relate to the feeling of not being understood. When you have so many things bottled up inside that it’s scary to show anyone because it’s weird, seems silly, or doesn’t make any sense. So when someone comes up to me and tells me that they can feel something from my drawings – it makes me very happy. And when someone comes up to me to order a commission because they feel that I can help them bring out their worlds – that’s even more amazing.
One of the most meaningful projects I’ve ever had the honor of working on was illustrating scenes of a dream for a young musician. I remember all of the intense details and vision that he had prepared for me to reference. It was truly a personal and precious story. I could tell that these dream sequences were something special and felt incredibly honored to be able to step into his world for the time that I could. I learned a lot as an artist myself. And I cannot wait to see the final result paired with the music he will compose for it.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Kelly L Her and I am a self taught artist based in Central Wisconsin. My story is not special. I grew up like many other artists out there – watching Saturday morning cartoons, getting inspired by anime, reading manga, and creating with my friends. I’ve always drawn since I can remember.
I currently work as a free lance artist creating character design and illustrations for clients in the book or music industry. My work is best known for it’s fantasy/romantic elements as those are the things that I most enjoy drawing. I also create comics on Webtoon in my spare time and hope to focus on this more this new year. If there is anyone who enjoys these topics, I would encourage you to give me a follow on my social medias @khruri.

In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
The best thing anyone can do to show their support to an artist or creative is to engage. A conversation, a question, or even a kind comment can cause a domino effect. If there are any artists like me – we are already in our heads too much. Any contact from the outside world is refreshing and welcome.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist for me is meeting people on the other side of the world who have the same likes as me. And we would have never known about each other if we hadn’t taken the step to share our creations. What an incredible world filled with talented people brought together by their own art.
