We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Courtney Revolution a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Courtney, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
The first time I knew I wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally was when I got my first digital camera for my 12th birthday. All of my friends had Myspace profiles and showing off your creativity was just one way to show your creativity and originality. I would change my profile picture all the time, which led to me having to take lots of pictures, and then ultimately finding out that my camera recorded videos too! From that point on I recorded everything — jokes in class, mini vlogs of how I’m feeling while my mom grocery shopped, and walks to McDonald’s in the neighborhood with my girls! Eventually, I found that an easy way to save those memories was on a site called Youtube. On Youtube, I could post my videos and actually SHARE them with people! Soon, my classmates weren’t the only audience members I had. People all over the world were commenting on my random ‘slice of life’ vlogs and from that moment on, I knew that I had to be involved in entertainment, whether that was in front of the camera or behind. I’m fortunate enough that I have a career where I get to do both!
Courtney, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hey hey! I’m Courtney Revolution, and I’m a pop culture commentator, content creator, podcast host and reality tv personality based in Los Angeles. I love to dive into the latest entertainment headlines, reality TV drama, nostalgic throwbacks, and of course the viral moments that make you laugh, think, or go, “Wait…what?!”
I got my start professionally cohosting the wildly successful live show The Morning Tea on the Hollyscoop YouTube channel where I spilled the news about all of our favorite celebrities and interacted with our 1.4 million subscribers in real-time. From Scooter Braun reaching out to find out who was behind YouTube’s hottest live show, to Cardi B issuing us a stern warning on Instagram, one thing about that platform — people were watching and invested. That particular role gave me the chance to develop my voice, connect with a massive audience (that still follow us today), and learn what it means to bring laughs, your life, and authenticity to digital content.
That experience laid the foundation for what would truly transform me—appearing on Netflix’s The Circle. That show changed my life—it wasn’t just about being on reality TV for me; this was a crash course in connecting with an audience on a deeper level, sharing my personal story and understanding the power of showing up as your authentic self. After the show finished, I took the momentum and channeled it into building a platform where I could just be MYSELF—fun, a little chaotic (in the best way), and always real (this is important)!
Today, I run multiple content platforms, including my TikTok (@courtrevolution), where I dish out pop culture commentary with relatability laughs and content from events that I attend, whether thats my favorite music festivals, movie premieres, even most recently — whale watching! I cohost my podcast Toast To Tea, with Hollyscoop Alumni Maddison Hill where we spill all the celeb tea in a way that feels like you’re catching up with your best friend, and I will soon debut a new pop culture project with a reputable production company that I can’t wait to share with you. Whether it’s breaking down the latest reality TV scandal or reminding you why the early 2000s were iconic and absolutely gagworthy, I’m always trying to create content that connects with people and reminds them that it’s okay to be a little bit kooky — in fact, stand strong and tall in that!
What sets me apart is my ability to make people feel seen and heard. I’m proud that my content isn’t just commentary; it’s a conversation. My followers know they can count on me to share my true thoughts, poke fun at the messy pop culture bubble, and also get real about life’s highs and lows when the time calls for it.
The thing I want people to know most about me and my work is that I’m here to build a community where everyone feels welcomed and celebrated. Too often there are people that can’t seem to find their ‘place’ in the world — there’s always a comfy cozy seat over here with me and The Revolution. The best part about everything though? I feel like I’m still just getting started.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative is knowing that no matter how small, an impact is being made. Before I went on reality tv, I didn’t see too many gay black men on reality that reminded me of ME. Since doing The Circle, I’ve met so many other queer black men that told me that they saw themselves in me, or thought that they could never be on reality tv until they saw me on tv just being myself. Each person that I’ve interacted that has shared that with me stays with me. That’s why I keep creating.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
I built my social media presence by consistently making YouTube videos and implanting myself into the YouTube community. I started religiously attending events, and getting to know creators that were also consistently attending events. I met one of my closest friends from doing a panel at a Youtube event. Once we all started working together and making collab videos, the shared audiences definitely increased our audience size. MY advice for those that are just starting to build their social media presence is to just be you. It’s such a cliche saying, but it’s SO much easier being yourself than being someone else. People connect with what is genuine, so be that.
