Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Sergio Chicon. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Sergio , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s the kindest thing anyone has ever done for you?
Most recently my friends Yannis Pappas and Chris Distefano who were guests on the Joe Rogan show gave me a shout out on the platform. I was listening to the episode while driving my Fiat with my dog Koda (Cane Corso) in the back seat drooling over my shoulder. I’m Puerto Rican but my name, car and dog are Italian, ha! I’m a boxing instructor and Comedian. There was a time I was apprehensive about sharing to comedy audiences that I was a trainer. I felt as if I wouldn’t be taken seriously. That has since changed. I have embraced that I am a teacher and a stand up comic. I enjoy doing both. One does not define me. I also have the liberty to do both of them on my terms. So, hearing my name being shouted out on one of the biggest podcasts by some of my closest friends and be described as both comic and a boxing instructor was not only gratifying but I also felt selfless, generous on my friends part. It is without a doubt one of the most recent, kindest gestures I have received recently in the field of work i’m in.

Sergio , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
In 2006 I was laying down some hard wood flooring in my home. I was rushing to get the job done. I had once piece left to cut. I was using a table saw on a brand new slippery floor. This is extremely poor practice. Towards the end of the last cut the blade on the saw hit a knot in the wood. The table saw jumped up and cut my finger. It was traumatic. I was in intense pain physically post-surgery for days and mentally for a few months. During my recovery I was reading a bio on Frida Khalo. I remember vividly a part of the book where she was involved in a trolly accident where she was impaled by the hand railing. Leaving her bedridden for over a year. During this time she tapped into her creative. Frida always wanted to paint but as she laid in the hospital bed she delve into it. The point is it wasnt’ until my accident that I started boxing and doing stand up comedy seriously. It was no longer an idea. It was no longer a thought. It was action. So I feel when I do stand up comedy the humor is inspired by something real. It comes from a painful place. When i’m training people the energy of reaching your goals, knowing you can do more pushing your limits is evident, tangible. I think people can feel that spirit from me.

Is there mission driving your creative journey?
One of my biggest motivators and not having to answer to anyone. I enjoy doing things on my terms. I don’t like answering to anyone and not having a boss.
