Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Magdalene Rose. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Magdalene Rose thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Do you feel you or your work has ever been misunderstood or mischaracterized? If so, tell us the story and how/why it happened and if there are any interesting learnings or insights you took from the experience?
I’ve been misunderstood a lot in my career, but I believe that has helped me learn how to feel comfortable without people’s approval, and I hope I can show others that they can be different and still have a place to belong. As a Christian artist, the rock music I play and my dark clothing/makeup can be “too scary,” and I’ve had churches cancel shows I was part of and received hateful comments both online and in person. As a rock artist, sometimes I receive hateful comments or belittling things yelled at me during shows because I am open about my faith in God. But none of these instances have caused me to quit or turn myself into something I am not. I’ve had the privilege of finding AMAZING churches that are more than willing to bring me in for concerts, and I’ve actually been able to help people who look like me feel more welcome in a church setting. I’ve also been invited on many mainstream rock tours, where the bands are super respectful of me and my beliefs, even if they don’t believe themselves. I’m able to still talk to people during the concerts and help them feel comfortable in their own skin, even if we’re just talking about music or regular life things. I’ve found people who will not only accept me, but challenge me to be the best version of myself!

Magdalene Rose, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Magdalene Rose Rojas, and I am solo artist that goes by Magdalene Rose. I play rock/metal music that is inspired by my faith in God and how He has brought healing to me through the darkest moments of my life. I started Magdalene Rose in January of 2023 and released my first single and music video “Shark Spray” in March 2023. I had formed a band with my husband as my drummer and began touring every month.
In September 2o23, I released my second single “A Bad Residential” featuring Spencer Chamberlain from the band Underoath. It grabbed a spot on Sirius XM’s Octane Test Drive and even landed the #15 spot on the Mainstream Billboard Rock charts! We quickly followed that single up with a 5 song EP in November of 2023 called “The Prelude,” which is approaching 1 million streams on Spotify alone.
In 2023, I played around 180-200 shows, and in 2024, I didn’t slow down. I accompanied my husband with his original band (Seventh Day Slumber) on the Winter Jam 2024 tour from January to March and captured footage to create content for their social media accounts. Magdalene Rose hit the road again starting in April, and we then joined the festival circuits in the summer. In September 2024, I released my most recent single called “Teeth Eater,” which discussed my journey of recovering from an eating disorder called anorexia. I started a tattoo movement similar to Project Semicolon, and people have been getting teeth tattoos in honor of “Teeth Eater” if they have also struggled with an eating disorder or body image issues. We ended the 2o24 touring season at around 150 shows and are gearing up for more new music and bigger touring in 2025!

What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
I think the best thing for me is to be able to see people flourish. It’s always awesome to hear that people like your music and think you’re cool, but anybody can make good music and be cool haha. Can you make a difference in someone’s life? Can you realize that this is all bigger than just fame and fortune? (And let me tell you, there’s not much of either where I’m at right now😂). The best thing I can do is help people. I write music based off of my experiences in life, and I’m blessed enough that other people relate and feel seen in my lyrics. I do my best to make sure no one feels alone or abandoned because I know how awful that feels. I can sit with people and help them find their voice, not because of any power I have, but because of this gift God has given me.

We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I used to stress so much about this, and I honestly still do from time to time. The thing that really clicked for me is when I stopped caring. I stopped wondering if people were going to like certain types of videos better, or if I should stay away from trends because “that’s for posers.” I started being myself online, and stopped putting so much pressure on myself to be online every hour of every day. I started making jokes about meeting my husbands family for the first time and poking fun at the people that hated on me, and people started to get to know the real me. They learned my story and saw me as a person instead of a commodity, and they understood that I was valuable because I now knew that myself. The numbers don’t matter, they’re going to fluctuate no matter how hard I fight them because that’s how social media works. Some things are popular one day, and gone the next, but if you build a community of people that actually care about you, the numbers don’t matter as much anymore.
