We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mychole Starr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mychole, thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I would say the most meaningful project I’ve worked on thus far has been my own, which is still a work in progress.
I’ve worked on projects for myself and others before, I’ve written songs for other people and gotten placements for other artists, but this current project is different.
This is the first project that I’ve completely submerged myself in and done everything on my own; from production to recording, mixing and mastering, I’ve literally done everything single process by myself and it’s very rewarding to be able to do that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I’ve been doing music since I was very young, it’s always been apart of my core. Growing up in church, I’d sing in the choir and do church plays/activities.
I had supportive parents who made sure my brother and I were always involved in the arts and using our talents and gifts.
I’ve lived many places, born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA, and migrated to cities like Fort Lauderdale, the DC/MD/VA area, Atlanta and I always find my way to the arts in every city.
I grew up on old school R&B and Gospel so those are the biggest influences that you’ll hear in my music.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being an artist to me is when people appreciate the work I’ve put in and the journey.
We are very sensitive people when it comes to putting ourselves and experiences out in the world, so the appreciation and support are like a great big thank you.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
Definitely! The goal of being completely independent in my craft.
I wasn’t always on the production/engineering side, I’d wait for people to send beats or wait to get in the studio and it would really hinder my progress.
I have a younger brother who has been very encouraging in my journey, he does music as well and he has been one of my biggest supporters in this journey of self sufficiency.
So, to be in this space where I’m doing everything from start to finish has eliminated a lot of the waiting and being In a box production wise.
