We were lucky to catch up with Sarah Kales recently and have shared our conversation below.
Sarah, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
I’m really excited about a new project called DTLA 28. I was recently elected secretary of the board. This is not only my first board role, but also a passion project. DTLA 28 is a non profit with the goal of bringing downtown Los Angeles to life. Our goal is to help local businesses and create a sense of community and engagement in DTLA. This is a new role for me, but I’m learning from some amazing and very experienced people and I’m so excited to help revamp Downtown Los Angeles.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I majored in marketing during college and was introduced to the Historic Core Business Improvement District’s Director through a mutual colleague. The stars aligned with an opening at the perfect time for me. I feel so fortunate to be able to work in my beloved city planning events, creating content for social media, and promoting small businesses.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I spent most of my career in the beauty and personal care industry, so leaving was a huge change. While a lot of aspects in creative fields overlap, learning the ins and outs of the Business Improvement District took some time and honestly I don’t think I’ll ever stop learning. I’m so fortunate to have Patti Berman, who has been working with BIDs for years, as a mentor. I learn something new every day.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think being able to create something out of nothing is extremely rewarding. For example, I love planning our resident nights. These are free events for the community. We try to make every month different, and I love coming up with ideas that I think people will enjoy. I also love hearing directly from the community about what they would like to experience. The first resident event that I planned was the Haunted Tour. Our host Maria, a medium, was a dream to work with. We planned the route and we even able to go inside one of LA’s most famous historical theaters. It was such a joy seeing the kids run around with their ghost hunting apps giggling. It’s a great feeling.
