We recently connected with Alex Czuleger and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Alex thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you tell us about a time where you or your team really helped a customer get an amazing result?
Several years back. About 3 or 4 years into The Green Room. Still very much in my DEBT PHASE. I sat with a young actress in the office on the 7th floor. notable because I usually sign people on the 11th floor because its a better view and makes up for any lack of charm from a previous sleepless night on my part. This young lady was special. I told her so. She had no credits nothing on the resume screamed “Star” but I knew she was a star. I told her “Right now, you need me more then I need you” “If I do my job correctly, that will change. just dont become a jerk when youre famous” We shook hands and I proceeded to flood her with auditions. Nothing stuck. Not a callback nothing. then somewhere around the 30th audition she got down to the last 2 for a series regular. She didnt get it. About a week later I get a call from the casting director. “We are writing in a new series regular role….would she like to audition?” . she went back and they recast the lead of the series with her. She made nearly 3/4 of a million dollars and I bought a condo in long beach. Moral of the story. She and I could have quit at any point. But her tenacity and my mine lead to mutual success. When people ask what exactly do managers do. I tell them this story.
Alex, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
So there are linear and non linear parts of the story of The Green Room. For our purposes here Ill be as candid as I am in person. Lets start with the linear. I was an actor and a stand up comedian to some degree. I performed enough to know what goes into it more importantly I saw the emotional burden of being an actor and the financial naivete. I was not willing to sign up for either of these. I love advocacy. There is something very satisfying about being a “professional fan”. So I set about working on what would become the green room. Essentially working until people care when you’re calling. I began as an intern the music legal department at Warner Bros. Studios and followed that up with an internship for a producer named Alan Greenspan. nice guy except he loved Keith Olbermann so kept him playing in the office constantly which isnt great for focus. My first mailroom job came about at Endeavor which is now WME. It got me just enough street cred to get a slightly better gig at APA which lead me to working for the managers of ZOEY DESCHANEL then SHIA LEBOUFS MANAGER – John Crosby. Who looks like a pro wrestler version of Albert Einstein. I designed the logo for The Green Room while in the Endeavor Mailroom. and wanted my own company before I turned 30. Which seemed like bragging rights at the time. I opened the company sept 2014.
I am extremely proud that I am able to make my dreams come true and support my family by helping other people make their dreams come true. Whatever the positive version of a pyramid scheme might be…this is it. I’m proud of being able to make an honest effort in a sometimes septic industry but do it in a way that my parents, and fiancé still love me. Its important to note whenever I do interviews like this that anyone who might reach out to me will always get a prompt reply. This is shocking to people these days. I find it shocking that it is shocking.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
It should be obvious but I work on commission which means if the Green Room were a car it needs to be constantly refueled with client success. Im writing this as we are threatened with the release of Bird flu. Appropriately enough this story of pivoting and resilience as the prompt suggests came prior to the covid lockdowns. I turned to my fiance and said :they are going to use this as an excuse to grab power and control us” which is precisely what they did and are attempting to do now. I knew broadly speaking Hollywood would go along with it so sure enough because of the lockdowns followed by strikes the money all but dried up. But I made a promise to my clients that so long as they didnt give up neither would I. I was down to 1 months money left before the debt I had worked so hard to pay off would start coming back. I told Erika (fiance) “we have 1 month of money left” when I received a random message from one of our long time followers. Signed them. And went on to make more money the following year then I had in the 3 previous years.
