We recently connected with Elijah Malik and have shared our conversation below.
Elijah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about the things you feel your parents did right and how those things have impacted your career and life.
I was born into a family of professional musicians, so music has always been a fundamental part of my life. Both of my parents turned their passion for music into successful careers, earning a respectable level of recognition for their craft. Growing up with parents who achieved their dreams showed me that it’s possible to build a life around creativity and imagination.
From a young age, I stood out in every environment I found myself in. While I initially saw this as a challenge, as I matured, I began to appreciate the unique path my life has taken. Having well-known parents opened many doors for me in the industry early on, but it also presented the challenge of stepping out of their shadow and being recognized for my own skills and accomplishments.
Over time, I embraced the responsibility of carving out my own identity as an artist. I focused on honing my craft, building confidence in my abilities, and finding my unique voice. Today, I feel fortunate to pursue a creative career that allows me to showcase my talents on my own terms.
My parents continue to inspire me as examples of what it means to strive for greatness and live authentically. Their journeys remind me of the importance of sharing my passions with the world rather than settling for blending into the background.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I’m Elijah Malik, a German-born, multitalented musician now based in San Francisco, California. My music blends genres like Rock, Trap, R&B, and Pop, creating a unique experience with every track. Growing up with my father, German rap legend Samy Deluxe, and my mother, former R&B and soul singer Brooke Russell, I was immersed in diverse musical styles from a young age.
At 8, I moved to the U.S. with my mom, living in Oregon before attending Howard University, where I earned a degree in Psychology with a minor in German. My studies in psychology deeply influence my introspective lyrics and storytelling, which resonate with listeners on a personal level.
I started making music inspired by rock bands like Rage Against The Machine and Muse, teaching myself guitar, drums, and honing my voice in high school choir. My time at Howard expanded my sound into Rap, Pop, Trap, and R&B, shaping the versatile style I bring to my music today.
In addition to producing and recording my own music, I’m passionate about live performance. Highlights include performing at my father’s 2019 MTV Unplugged concert and opening for Kelvyn Colt in Frankfurt in 2022. Since 2020, I’ve released music consistently, with my latest EP, Just A Dream, showcasing my growth as an artist. I’m excited to continue honing my craft, collaborating with others, and sharing my music with the world.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Growing up as a Black boy in Germany, I often felt isolated due to the lack of diversity. When I moved to Portland, Oregon, with my Mom, I faced a similar challenge, as it’s also a predominantly white area. Being both Black and German felt like straddling two vastly different identities. In Germany, I encountered racism for looking different, and in America, I struggled to adjust to a completely new culture.
One of my biggest insecurities was feeling disconnected from my Black identity. Having never been part of a Black community, I often questioned if I was “Black enough” to truly belong. A pivotal moment came in high school when a peer made a blatantly racist comment, saying, “Black people’s lives are less significant.” Outraged but unsure how to channel my anger, I decided to take action. I created a club called Kids of Color, bringing together Black students and others from diverse backgrounds. This was my first experience building a community where I felt a sense of belonging, and it was transformative.
That experience inspired me to apply to Howard University, where I found a rich cultural environment that profoundly shaped me. My time there introduced me to lifelong friendships and a deeper connection to my identity, which now heavily influences my life and music.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being an artist is creating authentic work that reflects my unique experiences and perspectives. In an age where many imitate trends, I strive to ensure every song I release is distinct and meaningful. For me, art isn’t just about following what’s popular—it’s about crafting something genuine that speaks to who I am.
Each song I create feels like a time capsule, capturing my thoughts, emotions, and growth at a specific moment in my life. Listening back, I can hear how my confidence and delivery have evolved over time, reminding me of how far I’ve come. Beyond personal fulfillment, art allows me to connect with others in profound ways. When listeners resonate with my music, it creates a shared emotional experience that bridges our unique lives.
Knowing that my work can inspire, comfort, or empower someone else is an incredible feeling. It’s a reminder of the universal power of art to unite us through stories, emotions, and human connection. This ability to touch others’ lives while staying true to myself is what makes being an artist so deeply rewarding.
