We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful David Pham. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with David below.
David, appreciate you joining us today. What do you think it takes to be successful?
I recently went to a content creator event in NYC meeting 50+ successful content creators and the one thing all of these people have in common is that they all have a strong “why” in their lives and a system to pursue their dreams.
Goals alone are not enough to reach your destination.
Winners and losers both have the same goals: Everyone wants to be rich, healthy and have freedom in their life.
But why do 99% of people stay average while 1% actually pursues their dream?
That’s because goals alone are not enough to become successful in life (whatever success means to you). The sole purpose of goals is to give you a general direction of where you should head. It’s like a lighthouse guiding your ship to a haven.
But without a stronger purpose (aka a why) or a system that allows you to take action every single day, I can already tell you that you won’t be on the winner’s side.
Let’s take content creation as an example:
Exactly one year ago I had a YouTube channel (spoiler alert: that channel failed). I set the goal of reaching my first 10K subscribers by the end of the year. However, I started the channel solely because I thought it was “cool” to have a channel and without any proper system. I edited the videos myself, one video took me several days to finish. As you can assume that was pretty tough. After 15 videos I only gained 42 subscribers and eventually gave up that channel.
Now let’s see what happens if you have a strong “why” and a system:
This year I decided to start another YouTube channel and here is the difference: This time my purpose to start a YouTube channel was to work towards financial freedom, I wanted to build an asset and took YouTube seriously from the beginning. I implemented a system that allowed me to create high quality videos while spending as little time as possible on editing (I outsourced editing because I don’t enjoy it and it takes way too much time to do it myself). I was now able to put out 2-3 videos per week at way higher quality than before!
Within 5 months I reached 18.000 subscribers and get brand deals every single month now. My goal is to reach 100.000 subscribers by the end of 2025!
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I’m actually a full time law student but realized that a regular 9-5 job is not it.
This year I decided to start with content creation and managed to grow my Social Media from 0 to over 60.000 followers across my platforms (YouTube, Instagram and TikTok). I made my first 10.000$ by posting videos which was mind blowing to me, because posting videos is my passion.
I recently launched my coaching business teaching other people how they can build their own personal brand and make money by posting videos as a content creator. You can check the content creator community here: https://whop.com/viral-masterclass-exclusive/
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Resilience or grit is something all successful people have that I know. Content creation is the perfect example for resilience.
In the beginning I started out with a couple hundred followers, mostly my family and friends. I started to post videos and they would barely get any attention. After putting in hours of scripting, filming and editing the videos this was really disappointing to me.
There were many times where I thought of giving up, mostly because the time I invested in the content didn’t produce any significant results. I felt trapped.
But similarly to baseball, all you need is one home-run to change the course of your life. The only difference is that in baseball if you hit a home-run you can earn a maximum of 4 points. In content your videos might reach millions and millions of people, the impact is way bigger.
That’s what happened to my channel. After 5 months of posting and seeing no results one of my videos suddenly took off. At first it hit 10.000 views, I was completely shocked to see that. It was a video about travel tips in South Korea that I didn’t expect to go viral at all. Soon after another video took off and hit 40,000 views when I was traveling in Jakarta. I simply doubled down on that type of content and grew to my first 10.000 followers within a month.
If you don’t quit, you can’t lose.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In content creation a lot of gurus will tell you to just post every single day and eventually you will go viral. That’s not true though. If you post meaningless content every single day you will NEVER go viral and reach the audience you deserve.
Posting regularly only makes sense if you improve your craft every single day, if you study the trends, if you learn consistently.
That’s what I did.
That’s what gave me immediate results.
That’s what I teach my clients.
