We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Vitalina Ghinzelli a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Vitalina, thanks for joining us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
In the course of my career as a designer, I’ve worked on many special projects. But so far, the most meaningful project I worked on started with a personal connection, and it unfolded in a way I never expected. My niece had recently started taking violin lessons. I’ve always been passionate about creating dramatic hats and wearable sculptures, so one afternoon while visiting her I gazed at the violin, my mind began to wander. I started thinking, “What if this violin could be transformed into something wearable? What if I could turn it into a dramatic, sculptural hat?” The process wasn’t easy. It took a lot of experimentation, adjusting the shape, and finding ways to balance the violin’s delicate form with the structural requirements of a wearable piece. But it was an incredibly fulfilling challenge. This project felt deeply meaningful to me because it was a fusion of my two passions: crafting bold artistry and honoring the creativity and spirit of my niece’s musical talent. And it is my hope that the women who buy my hats form their own connections with their style and the occasions that make life memorable
When the final piece was complete—a sculptural hat inspired by the violin’s shape and elements—I couldn’t wait to show it to my niece. The look on her face when she saw it was priceless. It was a moment I will always cherish because it felt like I had bridged the worlds of her music and my art in a way that was uniquely ours. It reminded me why I love creating—because it allows me to express something personal and meaningful while also sharing it with others, especially those I care about.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I am the founder and creative director of my signature line Vitalina Ghinzelli. It was conceived as a luxury brand that will eventually encompass various fashion, accessories, and lifestyle items with a distinct aesthetic that addresses the lives of modern women. I started with a debut collection of beautiful hats that are versatile enough to wear every day and dazzling enough for special events from weddings to formal parties. I’ve always had a particular vision for creating from the classical foundations of design that I can express across all the possibilities of contemporary lifestyles. So each hat embodies a timeless sense of style while exuding a very modern look. And I truly believe that today’s women are tired of the same old, cookie-cutter fashions from giant companies that mass produce disposable fashion. Not only are we finally more aware of how wasteful and damaging they are to the environment – but we’re at a moment when more women are looking for fashions that are special and unique. And I am confident that when people see my collections, they will know that Vitalina Ghinzelli is exactly what they are looking for.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
All my life, I’ve been driven to create. And throughout the course of that journey, my end goal has always been to make women feel beautiful and confident and special in my designs. And that’s not as easy as it sounds. Whenever I start on any design for my hats, for example, I have to be mindful of fulfilling various objectives. It has to provide function, fit flawlessly into the lives of modern women everywhere, and still possess a specific look that will make it different from anything else out there. Then, in crafting my pieces I make sure to use materials that fulfill my own goals of high quality standards and sustainability. All these factors push me into trying to surpass my own expectations in creating the finest possible creations.
Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
Creating is at the very heart of who I am. And this makes me sensitive to inspiration coming from everything around me. But, as a small business owner, I have to wear several hats at the same time, so to speak. My responsibilities cover both the creative and non-creative aspects of running a fashion brand. So I always have to balance the need to design pieces that are new and striking and unusual with the understanding that I have to consider materials, costs, and production. I can’t simply create whatever I want. The practical aspects of producing each piece can involve several factors that all have to come together if I want to make it work. That’s the kind of dilemma faced by every fashion brand – and often on an everyday basis. The point is, however, finding that middle ground where you can make magic happen.
