We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Megan Sena a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Megan thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
As a new author, having recently started writing, I’ve learned and grown exponentially. I was able to write my first two novels in a relatively short amount of time, which surprised even me. When I started the process, I had assumed the hardest part of writing a book would be actually writing it. I quickly learned I was wrong. The most work comes in the proofreading, editing, publishing, and continual marketing of the book. It’s an ongoing process that requires work on my part every day to promote my work.
I also found that during the writing process, the more I was able to outline my idea the easier I could write. It started with a simple outline, and as things progressed, the outline became more detailed and precise, and it helped immensely to create my books.
Now, as I work on my third book, I find the more structure I put together ahead of time, including the outline, character detail, time frames, etc., the more I can focus on the creative aspect of writing, making the final product even better.

Megan, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Writing fell into my lap as a side project in 2023, after my mother’s unexpected passing. Writing is not my full-time job, just a side project. For my full-time job, I travel quite often and find that the time I spend in hotel rooms while on the road can now be filled with writing, filling the void of the many conversations my mother and I would have over the phone.
When I started writing, I just used it as a time filler, something fun to do. I never expected that in a year’s time, I would have two novels published, and selling well. As my writing progresses, I am able to find my voice as a writer and can start to see a shift in my writing style. I’m excited to complete my third book, but I have also learned that the time I spend on it, fine tuning it, my readers will be much more pleased with it in the end.

What’s been the best source of new clients for you?
I have found that Facebook and other social media platforms are a great way to reach out to potential new readers. There are so many groups of avid readers, and it’s easy to connect to them, therefore getting my name out there to potential readers that would have not heard of me before.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I did not have an extensive group of beta readers on my first two books. On my third book, I have enlisted more help, and it is already paying off, and the feedback I’ve received has been very beneficial.
