We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Max Sarlis. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Max below.
Hi Max , thanks for joining us today. What was the most important lesson/experience you had in a job that has helped you in your professional career?
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned in my career as a physical education teacher came from an early experience in my first year of teaching. I was working with a diverse group of students, many of whom had varying levels of physical ability and interest in sports. One student, in particular, stood out—a shy, reluctant participant who rarely engaged in activities. This presented a challenge: how could I ensure all students felt included and motivated, regardless of their skill levels?
I decided to implement a peer-led activity where students collaborated in small groups to create their own games. The shy student, to my surprise, thrived in this setting. By the end of the activity, they were leading their group and contributing innovative ideas. It taught me the importance of fostering an inclusive environment and the power of giving students ownership over their learning.
This experience highlighted a critical lesson: physical education isn’t just about sports and fitness. It’s about teaching life skills like teamwork, communication, and leadership. This approach has shaped my professional philosophy and made me realize the value of creating opportunities for every student to shine, regardless of the context or school environment.
This mindset has been invaluable as I’ve transitioned to different schools and cultures. Each environment presents unique challenges, but the lesson remains universal: meet students where they are, adapt to their needs, and empower them to succeed.

Max , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a passionate educator, coach, and mentor with extensive experience in physical education and sports coaching. My journey into this field began with a deep love for sports and a belief in its transformative power. Over the years, I have expanded my expertise to include not only teaching physical education in schools but also providing private coaching in basketball, swimming, and martial arts. These sessions are tailored to meet the individual needs of students, whether they are beginners looking to develop foundational skills or advanced learners striving to reach competitive levels.
Additionally, I have a strong commitment to supporting aspiring physical education teachers. I conduct workshops, both online and offline, for educators seeking to understand and implement the IB and Cambridge PE curricula. These workshops are held locally and internationally, giving participants the tools to design engaging and effective programs that align with global standards. My ability to connect theory with practical application is one of the key elements that sets my workshops apart.
What distinguishes my approach is a focus on holistic development. For students, this means fostering physical, emotional, and social growth through sports and fitness. For educators, it means equipping them with the confidence and resources to inspire the next generation of learners. I believe in creating customized solutions that address the unique goals and challenges of every individual or group I work with.
I am most proud of the positive impact I have had on both students and fellow educators. Watching a student master a skill or seeing a teacher confidently deliver a dynamic PE lesson brings immense fulfillment. These moments reaffirm my commitment to excellence and innovation in physical education.
For potential clients, followers, or collaborators, I want them to know that my work is rooted in passion, professionalism, and adaptability. Whether it’s coaching a young athlete to achieve their personal best or helping an educator navigate the complexities of an international curriculum, my goal is always to empower others to reach their potential.

Do you think you’d choose a different profession or specialty if you were starting now?
Absolutely. If I could go back, I would choose the same profession without hesitation. Teaching physical education and coaching has been incredibly fulfilling, as it allows me to combine my love for sports with my passion for mentoring and inspiring others.
Working with students and aspiring teachers has not only allowed me to make a meaningful impact but has also helped me grow personally and professionally. Seeing students develop confidence, teamwork, and resilience, or watching educators gain the skills to inspire their own students, reinforces my belief in the value of this work.
While the journey has had its challenges, every experience has shaped me into a better educator and coach. I am proud of the path I’ve taken and wouldn’t trade it for anything else.

Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
In addition to training and knowledge, adaptability and interpersonal skills are crucial for succeeding in physical education and sports coaching. Here’s why:
1. Adaptability
Every student, team, or workshop participant is unique. Being able to adapt teaching methods to different learning styles, cultural contexts, and abilities ensures you can effectively meet their needs.
The ability to think on your feet during lessons, adjust to unexpected challenges (like weather or facility issues), or embrace new teaching technologies is essential in this ever-evolving field.
2. Empathy and Relationship-Building
Building trust and rapport with students and clients is foundational. When people feel supported and understood, they are more likely to engage and give their best effort.
This applies equally to mentoring educators. Understanding their goals and challenges allows you to tailor guidance that resonates with their experiences.
3. Passion and Enthusiasm
Your energy and excitement are contagious. Showing genuine enthusiasm for physical education and sports inspires students and motivates them to push their limits.
4. Leadership and Communication
Whether coaching a team, teaching a class, or leading a workshop, clear and inspiring communication is key. The ability to articulate goals, provide constructive feedback, and motivate others fosters a productive learning environment.
5. Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity
Especially when working internationally or with diverse groups, understanding and respecting cultural differences strengthens your ability to connect and succeed.
6. Resilience and Patience
Progress in sports and education takes time, and setbacks are inevitable. Staying patient and resilient not only helps you overcome challenges but also sets a powerful example for those you teach and coach.
These qualities, combined with expertise, create a strong foundation for success in physical education and coaching..
