We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Star Spera a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Star thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Who is your hero and why? What lessons have you learned from them and how have they influenced your journey?
If I had to name my hero, it would be my mom. My mom was a single mom growing up. She was a hair stylist for as long as I could remember and was always so artistic with other projects she did on the side. My mom has influenced my entire life, starting with her strength to never give up on things. She was and still is my biggest encourager. My mom’s creativity always sparked a creative eye in me and my business. Small things like the way my mom would color in a coloring book would inspire me in how beautiful she made a picture look.

Star, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I’m a wife and mom of an almost two-year-old girl. She sparked my interest in photography and capturing the precious moments you never want to forget. Every month I would take her to the local park with props and set her up for a little photoshoot. It always got me excited to be able to do something like this for her to look back on. My husband for Christmas one year gifted me a camera because he saw my ability and excitement in something so special. After a few months of pushing myself out of my comfort zone I was able to start building my brand. At first, I started offering free/ affordable sessions to local families for practice and within a month I was getting several bookings. I believe what sets me apart is my editing style. My style leans towards more the warm, bold and intimate giving a variety of colors. I’m proud of myself for being able to push through all of the times I wanted to give up or felt that I wasn’t good enough, I’m proud that I was able to do something for myself and my daughter to share stories with her as she gets older how she inspired me.
I want my clients to know that I have a passion to capture “them” being them. If they’re toddler isn’t feeling super photogenetic then I’m okay with going with the flow.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Taking advantage of all social media platforms is really important. I have made a few Tik Toks and that definitely has gotten me a few inquiries and bookings. Being involved in Facebook groups, mom groups, military groups, small business groups, ect definitely we’re helpful as well. I also recommend connecting with people on Instagram and hosting giveaways help bring in clientele.

How did you build your audience on social media?
I have worked really hard to build my presence, I recommend using your personal page to promote your business page. Interact with clients and their post, building a relationship. Using other social media platforms such as a Facebook page or TIk Tok and including your business page as well. Building relationships with other photographers is super important as well, creating a support system that you can all lean on and attract viewers to your page.
