We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mehreen Buksh. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mehreen below.
Mehreen, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar you earn in a new endeavor is always special. We’d love to hear about how you got your first client that wasn’t a friend or family.
My first ever client was a very good family friend, and the way it all came together still feels like a dream. The bride’s older sister reached out to me after seeing that I had just launched my company and had only been in the game for maybe 1-2 months. She trusted me to be the day-of coordinator for her sister’s Mehndi (henna party) and wedding reception, an event with over 650 guests from cities across Michigan like Rochester, Troy, Novi, Canton, Farmington Hills, and Bloomfield Hills, as well as from outside Michigan, including Chicago and Toronto.
I will never forget this experience—it couldn’t have been a more perfect “first event” to showcase not only who I am but also the quality of work I strive to deliver to every client, whether I know them personally or not. The exposure from this event was incredible, and after that, I gained so many clients who believed in me because of what they saw that weekend. It was the best start I could have asked for, and it cemented my passion for this business.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Mehreen, and I am the founder of Miraj Events, an event planning and coordination business. My journey into the event planning industry began long before it became a business. I’ve always had a passion for organizing and creating memorable experiences, starting at a young age when I volunteered to help plan youth and community events at my local mosque and throughout my academic career. Over the years, this passion grew as I helped friends and family with weddings, personal celebrations, and community functions. Eventually, I realized I could turn this love for planning into a career, and Miraj Events was born.
One of my proudest moments has been seeing how much traction Miraj Events has gained in such a short amount of time. For only being in the game less than a year, I’ve already had the privilege of coordinating several large-scale events. It’s surreal to see how far the business has come, but it’s also a reminder that my efforts are not going unnoticed. It’s clear that people want to hire me because they like what they see, and that motivates me to keep delivering excellence.
At Miraj Events, we provide a range of services from day-of coordination to partial and full-service planning for weddings, banquets, and other special occasions. We specialize in helping clients bring their visions to life while ensuring every detail is executed flawlessly. Our goal is to alleviate the stress of planning, allowing clients to fully enjoy their special moments.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
I originally started, and still am, in the healthcare industry. I hold an MPH degree from the University of Michigan and have a strong background in both clinical healthcare and administration. Healthcare has always been one of my passions, and I’ve built a fulfilling career in this field. However, I’ve also discovered my love for event planning, which led me to launch my own business, Miraj Events.
The pivot to balancing both industries was a significant shift, but it’s one that has felt incredibly natural. I’ve been able to organically balance my 9-to-5 healthcare role with running my event planning business so seamlessly that I’ve never had any issues or overlaps between the two. Both worlds require organization, adaptability, and attention to detail, which has allowed me to thrive in both arenas.
While I deeply value my work in healthcare, my ultimate dream is to grow Miraj Events into my sole source of income. For now, being able to balance these two passions without compromise has been a rewarding challenge, and I’m grateful for the opportunities to pursue both.

Is there something you think non-creatives will struggle to understand about your journey as a creative?
A lot of people don’t fully understand what “day-of coordination” is or why it’s such a valuable service, especially since it’s a fairly new concept that the newer generations are starting to embrace. In cultures like Desi and Middle Eastern families, it’s even less common to hire a wedding planner or day-of coordinator. Traditionally, families have relied on relatives or friends to help plan, organize, and coordinate wedding events. While this may have worked in the past, times have changed, and weddings have become more elaborate, with intricate details requiring professional oversight to ensure everything goes smoothly. In the context of Desi and Middle Eastern communities, this shift is significant. Weddings are deeply cultural and emotionally charged events, where the traditional reliance on family and friends can sometimes lead to overlooked details or unnecessary stress.
Day-of coordination isn’t just about “showing up” on the wedding day—it’s about stepping in during the final stages of planning and making sure every detail comes together seamlessly. It’s not an easy job that comes naturally to everyone. This role requires meticulous attention to detail, the ability to anticipate the next 10 steps before they even happen, and the skill to troubleshoot challenges in a matter of minutes. Whether it’s managing vendors, adjusting timelines, or solving last-minute issues, a coordinator needs to think on their feet and always have a backup plan to handle anything that might go wrong—all while maintaining a calm and composed demeanor.
This service is invaluable because it allows couples and their families to fully enjoy their big day without stress. For those unfamiliar with the concept, day-of coordination is about taking all the months of planning and ensuring they’re executed flawlessly. It’s exciting to see more people, especially in newer generations, recognizing the value of this service and being willing to invest in it.
Ultimately, wedding planning and day-of coordination are not just tasks—they’re an art form. It’s about creating memories, managing emotions, and ensuring that every couple’s vision comes to life perfectly. Times may have changed, but the essence of what makes a wedding magical remains the same: joy, love, and the peace of mind to fully experience it all.
