Hi Kricia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?

Although my background is in sales and marketing, I’ve always had a deep-seated passion for creative pursuits. In 2022, after enduring the pandemic and two years of remote work, I found myself in a bit of a rut. While I appreciated my marketing career, I was craving something fresh and inspiring. During a long weekend trip to Austin, TX, I wandered into a custom hat shop—and that unexpected encounter changed the course of my life.

For the first time, I witnessed the artistry behind custom hat-making. As a child, I dreamed of becoming a fashion designer, but self-doubt held me back. This time was different. I became captivated by the century-old techniques and tools, sparking a new obsession: learning to make hats myself.

After diving into research, I discovered that finding quality hat-making classes was no easy task. It wasn’t until a trip to Florence, Italy, that I stumbled upon a three-month intensive course. I decided to put everything on hold and see where this new path would lead, knowing that whatever was meant for me would stay.

Today, I own a custom hat shop in Bozeman, MT, where I offer personalized hat-making experiences both in person and online.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?

Both yes and no. I had a clear entrepreneurial vision for what I wanted to create, but everything has taken far more time than I anticipated. My best advice for starting a business is to expect roadblocks; just when you think you’ve overcome one, another appears. Early on, it was about adapting from the tools I used in Italy to finding and mastering similar tools here. Now, I’m focused on optimizing my hat-shaping process so I can host small gatherings like bachelorette and birthday parties. There’s always something to work through, but that’s exactly what keeps it exciting and fulfilling!

As the owner and hat maker at Bang Bang, I specialize in creating custom hat experiences tailored to each client’s needs. Depending on your timeline and the experience level you’re looking for, I offer three distinct options: in-person, virtual, and made-to-measure. Our in-person experience is especially popular, as it allows clients to leave with their custom hat the same day.

The process begins with a personalized consultation, followed by a relaxing moment to enjoy a complimentary beverage while I hand-shape and style your hat to perfection. Each Bang Bang hat experience is intimate and one-on-one, where I’ll guide you in choosing the ideal hat to match your skin tone, face shape, and unique style.

One of the greatest aspects of Bozeman is its vibrant, close-knit community and the unique culture that flourishes here. The local support, especially among women-owned businesses, has been remarkable and truly inspiring. Bozeman isn’t just a scenic mountain town; it’s a place where businesses lift each other up and residents value connection and collaboration. The energy here encourages creativity and growth, making it a fantastic environment for entrepreneurs and artisans alike.
While the community and energy here is worth it, I’ll admit, the rapid growth has its downsides. Housing prices have really gone up, making it challenging for locals and newcomers to find affordable places to live. The increase in traffic and development also has impacted that small-town feel Bozeman is known for. And as much as I love seeing people enjoy the outdoors, the trails and local spots are definitely busier than they used to be. It’s a balancing act—keeping Bozeman’s charm while managing the changes that come with growth.
