Today we’d like to introduce you to Holly Gilmour
Hi Holly, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always had passion for art, particularly illustration. As a child, I was drawn to the character designs in my favorite cartoons, toys, and storybooks—these became my earliest sources of inspiration. Thanks to the support of my parents, I always had the art supplies I needed to nurture my creativity.
After high school, I was unsure about my next steps, but a teacher introduced me to a college program at an incredible art school. That moment sparked something in me, and I knew I wanted to turn my love for art into a career and pursue that dream wholeheartedly.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey hasn’t always been straightforward. I briefly veered off course to pursue a career as a hairstylist, but quickly realized it wasn’t the right fit for me. For a time, I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take, but I knew I needed to follow a creative path. Ultimately, returning to my roots in illustration and fiber arts was the natural choice. It’s always been the place I gravitate back to, and I’ve come to realize that it’s where I truly belong.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently create digital illustrations, though I used to work with gouache paints. While I love both mediums, digital art allows me to fully express myself through vibrant, bold colors. It gives me the freedom to push my work further and bring my vision to life in ways that feel more dynamic and precise.
That said, I also have a deep love for working with wool, and I create needle-felted characters based on my illustrations. This process is a perfect complement to my digital work. I’ve always been drawn to toys and character creation, and transforming my drawings into tangible, three-dimensional pieces feels like a unique way to bring my art to life in a new form.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I plan to combine my felted characters and digital illustrations to create a book. While I’m still developing the concept, it’s something I’m determined to bring to life within the next five years.
Additionally, I have a strong desire to animate my felted characters, particularly through stop-motion. It’s a big dream of mine, and I’m excited about the possibilities of bringing my creations to life in that way.
