Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Thomson
Hi Brandon, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Growing up, I use to get bully for being biracial, it was that I was too black for the white kids and too white for the black kids. It was hard for me to fit in with kids my own age which caused me to get into fights and trust people less. One day I was watching TV late on the weekend and I was able to catch an anime series called Yu Yu Hakusho. It tells the story of Yusuke Urameshi, a teenage delinquent who is struck and killed by a car while saving a child’s life. After being revived by ruler son of the underworld, Yusuke is revived and appointed the title of “Underworld Detective”. The one thing that stood out so much when watching it was the main character Yusuke, he had such a bad attitude but with a tender soul that really resonated with me. I felt like I connected with this character that it inspired me to read the manga series and help get through a lot of bullying and overall struggles I was dealing as kid towards my teenage years.
Once I got into college, I started to notice I had a real passion for writing, it was the only subject that kept me going in for more that I suddenly realize that this was my goal all along. I wanted to write stories of characters that seemed misunderstood, characters that inspired to fight back against the injustice I dealt with as a kid. As of now I been writing for six years, and it’s been a journey. I will admit it hasn’t been easy. Even present day, I’m stressing and struggling over things I wish I knew beforehand, but for some reason there a joy for me in it because it shows that their silver lining on the goals I want to achieve and knowing it’s going to pay off. Which it did because now I have artist that I looked up to following and willing work with me on certain projects so I can say my determination didn’t stir me wrong. For people reading my life I want them to know I don’t want to say “Hard work gives results” because that pretty cliche but I do want to say that always stay on the thing that give you passion even if you can’t wrong on it all the time but always try to stay consistent because you never know who’s watching your progress.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh goodness no! This has not been a smooth road, trust me. I can literally write a whole college easy of some of things that happened to me. To name a few; been fired for injustice reasons, laid off work for nonsense reasons, and lastly, having my lung collapse due to stress and almost having a near death experience. Even present day, I’m stressing and struggling over things I wish I knew beforehand, but for some reason there a joy for me in it because it shows that their silver lining on the goals I want to achieve and knowing it’s going to pay off. Which it did, because now I have artist and recruiters that are willing to work with me on certain projects and job positions so I can say all those struggles made me stronger. I really wish some of those things didn’t happen to me, but that just how the universe works, I guess. (laughs)
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Of course! So being a writer I just finished my comic book called WolfBane. It follows the story of a sophomore college student, Arago Rhodes, who been passed down a superhero title from a long legacy of Champions and Gods.
The campaign for the first issue has ended with success but at the time of this interview, late pledges are now open to those who missed out on the campaign. Late pledges will close on October 13th so be sure to pledge so you can get a copy of the first issue!
I’m proud how this series came out since this project took three years to complete. I personally think this story is set apart from a lot of the mainstream superhero stories because while most hero stories take place in New York or fictional cities, this story will focus more on being in the Washington metropolitan area.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Well besides my family and partner who been amazing supporters in my life, I would love to give a shoutout to my lead artist of Wolfbane and friend Koi Correon. We connected during the pandemic and a lot of projects got shelved since most of his clients couldn’t work on their projects once the lockdown started. At the time, I was let go from my employment, but I had a savings ready to start my journey within comics. Plus, since my next job wasn’t going to start until four months out of getting the offer I had a lot of free time to brainstorm. Once I contacted Koi and pitch him some of my projects, we immediately hit it off and the rest was history. It wasn’t for Koi amazing art skills and advice within the comic book industry I wouldn’t have gotten as far as I did.
