Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Kinsella
Lindsey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Writing was something I took in interest in from childhood; it was often highlighted at school how it was something I had a talent for. Yet, it was always on the backburner; something I considered from time to time but was always to busy to commit to.
Then came 2020 and the COVID lockdown. A terrible time for many, for sure, but one which came with the benefit of suddenly having time. So I took the plunge and soon learned to love the craft.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not long after I started my newest book, “Broken Voyage,” my youngest son was born. Nothing throws a spanner in the works quite like a new-born baby! Finding time to write around a demanding family life was almost impossible and the book was shelved for almost a year. But finding the balance was key; I now manage time for both and sometimes I even squeeze in some sleep!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
As an author, fiction is my specialty. However, something I feel sets my work apart is the inclusion of non-fiction elements. I’m a nerd at heart, and there’s nothing I love more than learning some cool new facts; so I like to offer my readers the same.
My first two books, “The Lazarus Taxa” and “The Heart of Pangaea,” both feature short chapters (only a page or two) of interesting palaeontology factoids interspersed throughout the story.
We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’ve heard that authors are often advised to find a genre, find an audience, and stick to it. On that basis, each of my books have been a risk from the very conception. I’ve flip-flopped from hard science fiction, to wholesome middle-grade fantasy, to gritty thrillers, and I’m dying to write some comedy and/or horror.
I do worry it might alienate existing readers, and “The Heart of Pangaea” was certainly difficult to market to that base, but I feel I need that variety to keep the creative juices flowing.
