Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Babylon
Hi Joey , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I truly got started around the ages of 9-10 singing with my older sister. My father played music since he was a young teenager as well. I picked up guitar and taught by my father. I then started taking piano lessons and join a choir at my school. Anyways I grew up going to church, singing hymns, writing my own music from a young age. My brothers and I moved in with a family who became our legal guardians and the mom was a piano teacher. Around the age of 14 my mother passed away and music was like an anchor for me to be able to heal. Throughout this whole process growing up in a rural community something inside of me knew I had to continue with my music and I couldn’t let the opinions of others stop me. Anyways I started writing my own songs around 11-12, recording around 17, and around the age 19 is when I started really recording and I havent stopped since and that when I then adopted the name of Joey Babylon. Throughout that I have released about 17 songs through soundcloud and other streaming services. Living in Seattle, LA, Mexico City, Anchorage, Portland, and Tonasket. Now I live in Portland and looking for the next city for me. I am trying my best to create an album at the element that is at one hand catchy but also incredibly emotive and sensitive. With influences of baroque, pop, trap, classical piano, and a true musical ballad. Now this is just the tip of the experience but I want to create power and influence and help the listener understand they are the leading edge of humanity and to go forth and believe in themselves.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has indeed been beautiful and bloody. With the death of my mother. The resistence I had from pursuing music from my guardians. But also the encouragement I had from birth father. Telling me crying to never give up on my dreams in my parents messy bedroom in Eastern Washington. In that moment I swore to myself I would never let anything stop me. During school I was often the only boy in the choir and would be made fun of for it for a time. I had to keep persevering because that is what I loved. In more recent years I have had to face something new. Something more personal. My own choices. In mexico I found myself living with my first boyfriend and we married and I left a month after we got married because of the volitility of our relationship. I had to learn how to let go and to forgive and to build a new life for myself. Through it all I still had music. I still am recording. The stories and the details and the secrets I hold still ring throughout time and reality. I know every single day I am getting closer. I am so patient. I am so patient. Change is a constant, all my life everything has been changing all the time. Embrace it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My name is Joey Babylon and I am known for being such a great and wonderful human regardless of circumstances that I went through. I am also known for my music and the music have shared over the years in many different ways. I am also known for getting my photo taken and modeling. What sets me apart is generally my emotive music, great sense of humour, and my positive attitude. I hope that I am known for my kindness, my funny jokes, my good looks, and my beautiful songs.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see that specifically things will be able to be more independent. I believe more people can do it their way. less gate keepers.
