Today we’d like to introduce you to Joanna Gonzalez
Hi Joanna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey in visual communication began long before I realized it was my calling. As a child, I always saw the world through a unique lens, interpreting and expressing ideas visually. This innate ability naturally led me to graphic design, a field I’ve now been passionate about for over seven years.
I started my career eager to translate complex ideas into visually compelling stories. As I honed my skills, I found myself collaborating with an incredibly diverse range of teams and clients, each project teaching me about the power of visual storytelling and collaboration to create immersive, emotionally resonant experiences. Today, I find myself exactly where I’m meant to be – at the intersection of creativity and impact.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Raised in a vibrant Puerto Rican household in Brooklyn, NY where Spanish was our primary language, I grew up with a rich cultural background. As I started school, I encountered a few challenges: adapting to English-centric environments while unknowingly managing undiagnosed ADHD. These circumstances often left me feeling like I had to work twice as hard as my peers. Inspired by my blue-collar father’s strong work ethic, I developed a relentless determination. This drive ultimately paved the way for opportunities my younger self could have never envisioned. However, true growth came from embracing self-discovery and adaptability. Over time, I’ve learned to balance external pressures with my own needs, cultivating the patience to discern what truly works for me. I’m still evolving, but with a deeper understanding of my strengths and how to thrive despite obstacles.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a graphic designer, I specialize in digital design, art direction, and branding. What sets me apart is my versatility, honed through collaborations and work experience ranging from startups and nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies and digital media firms.
I’m particularly proud of my ability to create immersive, emotionally resonant experiences that align with each client’s unique vision. What truly distinguishes my work is my commitment to purpose-driven design. Whether it’s developing a brand identity, amplifying a nonprofit’s message, or enhancing user experiences, I strive to create impactful visuals that not only look appealing but also serve a clear purpose. This approach has resulted in some of my most successful projects, where design becomes a powerful tool for communication and positive change.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is freedom – not just in the conventional sense, but the freedom to create, express, and evolve. As a designer, I cherish the liberty to experiment with new ideas and challenge myself. This extends beyond my professional life, empowering me to shape my own path, make bold choices, and continuously reinvent myself. I value it because freedom fuels innovation and fosters authenticity. Ultimately, the freedom to explore, fail, learn, and succeed is what drives my passion and allows me to make a meaningful contribution to the world through design and also encourages me to grow continually.
