Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Romeo
Hi Michele, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
NYC-based guitar player, producer, and composer Michele Romeo has had a fine ear for music since an early age. When he was only 4 years old, his parents gifted him a present that would be a life-changing milestone: his very first guitar. That is when his fascination not only for music but for playing itself blossomed to never go away. He formally started to study guitar at the age of 10, and shortly after, he began attending the Centro Formazione Musicale in Palermo, Italy, to enrich his knowledge and start mastering the instrument professionally.
At 13 years old, Michele started dealing with a particular eye condition that led him to lose his sight at the age of 18. Nonetheless, this did not diminish his will to pursue his main goals in life. While dedicating himself to music—he composed his first song in 2008—in 2012, he decided to move to Milan to attend IULM University, where he studied English and Spanish translation. In that same year, Michele began working on his first album, Leaves, which was released in December 2014 and presented at the renowned Feltrinelli Music Stores in Palermo right upon its release.
In 2015, Michele graduated and made his first appearance on national Italian TV as a guest on the show “A sua immagine” hosted by Lorena Bianchetti, where he discussed the correlation between music and spirituality according to his very personal experience.
The life experience in Milan not only gave Michele the chance to mature significantly as a person, but it was also an essential turning point for his career. At the end of his successful university path, he decided to dedicate his life to music and never look back. He then began to focus on fulfilling one of his lifelong goals: moving to the United States to work as a professional musician. In 2016, Michele gained a scholarship to attend the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Before taking the plunge, he spent a year in his homeland, Sicily, where he found the right inspiration to compose and record the tracks for his second album, Savage Land. While in Sicily, Michele also had the chance to prepare for his experience at Berklee by studying with renowned Sicilian guitar masters Michele Pantaleo, Francesco Buzzurro, and Osvaldo Lo Iacono.
In 2017, Michele finally moved to Boston and began attending the Berklee College of Music. The Boston experience was a great opportunity for him to meet and play with many talented musicians and masters from diverse backgrounds. This eventually led him to grow significantly as a musician and to find new pathways in his approach to the instrument. Berklee was also a gateway for Michele to access the world of music production, allowing him to add the skills of a mixing engineer to his musical repertoire. Among his many learning experiences, he participated in several Master Classes with important guitar masters like Steve Vai, Jennifer Batten, Andrea Braido, Massimo Varini, and Ciro Manna.
Since 2022, Michele has settled in New York City, where he started composing and producing his own projects and tracks, including “Brookline (Harvard St.),” “Space Fantasy,” and “I Do Like You But.”
GET IN TOUCH
“Michele made my project come to life. He is an incredibly talented guitar player, producer, and mixing engineer. He is patient, well-organized, and eager to learn.”
— Valeriia Vovk, singer & songwriter
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Definitely, my path has not been smooth for various reasons. Losing my sight along the way was a significant challenge initially. I had to learn how to rearrange my life, but eventually, I found my way. The main things that kept me alive in the past few years, alongside music, family, and friends, have been my strong love for life. You can face challenges, and sometimes the road can be twisted, but nothing and nobody can take away your love and enthusiasm for life!
Currently, I am still working on my music, creating new content, and I feel very different from a few years ago, both as a person and a musician. I am challenging myself with many new musical ventures I never tried before. Even though it can be hard, this is my motivation to push myself and get better every day. My dream is to continually become a better version of myself every year, both musically and personally.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work as a guitar player, composer, producer, and mixing engineer is one of the most beautiful things that has happened to me in life. I love playing guitar and expressing myself by composing my own music. I also love producing and mixing my own music because it allows me to control the various sounds and atmospheres I want to create.
The creative process of making music often feels like a dream. Sometimes, it doesn’t even feel like work because I have so much fun doing it!
I also enjoy creating music for other artists. Among the people I work with is Valeriia Vovk, a talented Ukrainian singer-songwriter.
If you would like to explore more of what I do, you can find me on Instagram as @micheleromeomusic. I have many new upcoming content where I will show how I work with music technology software as a blind person.
Beyond this, I am also a music teacher, and I love it! I work with both kids and adults, offering also online classes for guitar, ukulele, including mixing and music theory.
Feel free to send me a DM on Instagram or an email at [email protected] if you would like to connect! :)
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The number of freelance opportunities I receive often depends on the volume of calls I get. The more calls I receive, the more work I can take on.
Promoting my own music can sometimes be challenging, but I’m currently focused on creating a new album.
As a versatile guitar player, I strive to connect with as many musicians as possible to secure new gigs. I feel fortunate to have friends who recommend me for job opportunities, but I hope to receive more calls for both guitar and mixing gigs in the coming weeks.
Recently, I’ve been playing with a new rock band in New York called La Pucelle. It’s a very exciting project, and if there are any readers from New York, I would love for you to come check out our shows! :)
