Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Phyllis Pelzer
Hi Dr. Phyllis , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story is a story of the fulfillment of HOPE. I can recall going through some turbulent heartbreaking days from being a divorced single mother, who has experienced domestic violence. As a Woman of Faith, I would cry out to God in prayer for help to navigate the challenges of life. I would like to recall one day, I was standing in my bedroom and having this heart to heart conversation with my Father God. I was looking for answers, that would help me emotionally to be a better me and heal. As I was praying, God impressed in my heart, like a whisper, “HOPE”. I recall looking up and saying “Hope…. God? That’s it? Hope?” At that time, I did not appreciate that one word of comfort God was sending me; I was disappointed and didn’t get more details or a plan of what to do to improve my feelings of despair. However, as I continued on in life….HOPE has become my super word and it has manifested wonderful new beginnings in my life. God has blessed and ushered me from a life of hopelessness to a life manifested by HOPE IN GOD for victorious living. This hope has empowered me to reach out to others and serve faith-based encouragement, that can empower them into a victorious mindset filled with hope in spite of life challenging experiences.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Although it has not been a smooth road; it has been a rewarding road of overcoming experiences to share and encourage others. My mind reflects back to the time when I starting life over again as a divorcee, and my son and I moved into a new apartment. I remember him as a toddler asking me “Mom can I have an orange?” and I was able to go into the refrigerator and give him an orange. I was so happy at that time to be able to provide that for him because financially I was struggling. Even thou it was a small thing, but to me it was so grand. To see his little face light up with joy over receiving an orange from his mother. There were struggles of paying the rent and being at the mercy of tying to figure out who can I ask to borrow from this time, until pay day or payback plans. This just came to mind as well, although I was struggling I still had a heart to want to help others as well. My neighbor was having birthday party for her grandchildren and her oven went out. I had just arrived back at my apartment with a friend of mine and heard of my neighbor’s dilemma; right away I said “give me the cake, I’ll bake it for you!” Well, to my surprise, the utility gas representative came up at the same time and informed me he had just turned off my gas. My friend offered to give him $100 to turn it back on, but it was too late since he had already turned it off. Yes, it was upsetting, and it was also funny and we had to laugh…because here I was going to help bake her cake and I needed help myself. There were many ups and downs, but with God’s grace, much prayer, the importance of being a mom to my son, nonjudgemental support from my Mother, and several friends I preserved.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Wow! I love this question! My aunt used to say “Girl, you got a big mind!” (I didn’t know what she meant at the time, but it’s something that I always remember her saying). As a matter of fact, it was at the family gathering at her house, when I was young that I slipped away to the living room away from everyone. I sat on her wooden floors listening to the radio, and wondering “How did all those people fit in the radio? It was so puzzling to me…I thought they were all gathered inside (Lol…a child’s mind). Well, little did I know God was giving me a sneak peek into my future as a communicator and my voice would be heard around the world. I also wanted to be a singing star like Diana Ross (at the time) and loved to dance. Guess what? I was not a fan of academics and had to make up so much time to graduate from high school, my mother was determined I was going to graduate. So I did summer school, fall, winter for 2 years straight to make up BUT …I earned my High School Diploma. So never in my wildest dreams growing up did I image earning my Doctorate.
