Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jason Shapiro. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jason, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
Numerous
Starting from an art tour at a young age directly focusing on school and teen violence.
My wife’s brand identity
A friend’s brand identity and product line (updated regularly)
To “passion projects” that get my creative juices going and finding techniques that work for me to use as translators to viewers.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Went to school for Graphic Design, but my passion for art started WAY before that. Art lessons, creative clubs, art shows all catapulted my drive to become an artist…
Although, looking back, i was one already while doing those things. I’ve always went back and forth from this creative outlet to one that has been my career for more than half my life. The culinary arts at point was “just a job” until someone pointed out, much like my artwork, that I am “pretty good at that”. Changing the perspective approach to the culinary arts was something I lavished in. I draw just about every dish concept I have. So working with both artistic constructs is wonderful. I am not a “starving artist”. Nor am I a chef that paints. Simply myself and expressing my creativity in the forms im most found of…visual art, and food!
I decided to embark on an unknown journey with my art to bring to mass the visions I have (including, but not limited to) commissions. The online store was born. Branding identity, traditional mixed with digital artwork, client only products, or singular works of art, and myown expressions are now main stays.
It is not easy though…as I discovered the term I mentioned before “the starving artist” was applied to that outlet of my creativity.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve been molding, changing, developing my online presence as an artist for years! Each new change has come with success and failures. Learning from and applying lessons to next ventures only strengthened my “skin” that exists to be criticized, confronted, collaborated, and my favorite collected. Month after month, quater after quater, looking at a “P&L” statement for my art was (and sometimes still is) an awful sight. Is it nice to turn a profit? Yes! Is it why I do what I do? To some degree. I love offering my talent as a solution for someone’s issue. “What do I put on this wall?” My art. “What should I wear?” My merchandise. “What should my logo be?” My visual interpretation of your business/brand.
I simply cannot stop creating.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
See them and their work. Take notice of what they do daily to express themselves. Be open for interpretation, explanation, and have the maturity to try to “see it from their eye”. I say this not to the individual but in mass.
Also…”us creatives” need to bond. Create more groups, reach out more, collaborate more, or even regularly. This is not the Renaissance where a few pave the way for others and make long lasting movements with bold strokes (pun intended). In a world now that faces Ai, it has come to us creative collective to use the tools at hand, embrace change, and push, as a whole, to recieve the recognition we are all looking for.
