We recently connected with Dr. Alfred Alessi and have shared our conversation below.
Dr. Alfred, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about how you went about setting up your own practice and if you have any advice for professionals who might be considering starting their own?
In the early days of my practice I was fortunate to have learned so much from business partners who helped me to get started that I had a very solid foundation from which to grow. However when I went out on my own there were things I needed to establish as part of our culture that would set us apart in the field. If I could go back and do it differently I would have niched my practice sooner. I was all over the place trying to help everyone and the message of what I specialized in got lost in this.
I would recommend anyone who is considering starting their own business or practice to find at least 3 mentors in the same field or a similar field. This is invaluable for learning from the lessons that they will have experienced in their careers.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
My journey into functional health began at an early age. I was an athlete my entire life and always was interested in leveling up my performance and recovery so that I could play better. In college my love for athletics turned into a career as a personal trainer and performance coach. After college while playing in a men’s lacrosse league I suffered a major injury to my shoulder that required a complete reconstructive surgery. The surgery was successful and I was able to use my arm, however, I had lingering joint and nerve pain that was excruciating. The only answers I received from the doctors was that it was arthritis and I would have to just live with it and could take medicine to help. This was not how I wanted to live my life, so I sought other options. I met a chiropractor who within 6 visits had my shoulder completely free of pain and able to lift and press weights overhead. I thought I would never play sports again until this. I knew right then I had to learn this. Partly for my own knowledge but also to be able to share what I had experienced. So I enrolled in chiropractic college. Throughout my graduate program I earned multiple external certifications in myoneural medicine and functional neurology. The same treatment system that had healed my shoulder pain. I became passionate about functional nutrition and supplementation and everything that goes into optimizing human performance.
At Alessi Functional Health our specialty is spinal pain ad dysfunction. Things we treat most are back or neck pain, herniated and bulging discs, sciatica, sports injuries and joint pain. We utilize our Pain Free Future method to get our patients amazing results that are not just temporary but permanent. This is done by using multiple already powerful treatment modalities in combination to enhance their power through a summative effect. This is what sets us apart from other practices in the field. When patients buy in and commit to the program they will achieve results that they can maintain.
My philosophy is that I am here to empower my patients to take their health into their own hands and be able to live to the highest possible self.

Can you talk to us about how your funded your firm or practice?
The funding I used to start my business was all my own. I put in essentially everything I had at the beginning and ran my business on credit cards and debt until it became sustainable and profitable. It was a pure grind mentality and I think that is what gave me the drive to push it to the next level. Knowing it was boom or bust was quite motivating. I don’t necessarily recommend this as a way to start but that’s just what I did and figured it out. If I could do it over again I wouldn’t use credit cards but try to secure a line of credit instead with a lower interest rate.

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
Our reputation is built on the fact that we serve every patient to the highest capacity of what they are wanting. Some patients want to commit to healing, some want a quick fix, some want to just learn about their condition and we treat everyone with respect and do not push our services or care. Because of this people will refer their friends and family and tell all of their people about us.
