We were lucky to catch up with Elyse Winter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Elyse , thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry?
I feel that large fashion companies forget the point of what they do. Their main focus is their bottom line and making numbers. . The art of the salesperson is lost in my opinion. It’s all about digging deeper and getting to know someone and their closet/ lifestyle.
Fashion is meant to make people feel better about themselves and spark joy. I have a really hard time shopping in store or being bombarded by emails from marketing teams. If salespeople and large companies took time to get to know their customers and build meaningful relationships, the sales would come in naturally.
Elyse , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I am a personal stylist and shopper based out of Los Angeles & New York. I was born and raised in Los Angeles and my husband grew up in New York. The influence of the two cities is so special to me and gives me two perspectives when I’m working with a new client.
I offer my services both virtually and in-person. What’s Interesting is that most people think a stylist is just for celebrities or red carpet situations… the reality is that most of my clients are not on the red carpet. I work with “normal” everyday people who want to look and FEEL their best. Majority of my clients are mothers who are coming up for air after prioritizing everyone else in their lives. It’s an honor and privilege to help fellow moms who are finally taking space and time for themselves.
My style is very casual and I’m generally in jeans and a white T-shirt. With that being said, I take pride in my range. I have clients who are very conservative and others who are edgy and love to show skin.
You have to adapt to a client and understand their lifestyle and goals. The first thing I do with a new client is dive deep and get to know them.
People think fashion is shallow, I feel the complete opposite. I recently worked with a client who is battling cancer. My goal is to make sure she feels amazing at all times, even at doctor appointments. Life is too short to not enjoy and have fun with clothes. Fashion is meant to spark joy. My purpose is to help my clients feel like themselves and enjoy their wardrobes.
Any insights you can share with us about how you built up your social media presence?
My following is very small, but I am proud of what I have built. I have always stayed true to myself and I post what feels natural. I refuse to post videos and on tik tok because it doesn’t feel like ME.
I now partner with some fabulous companies like Mytheresa, Saks, and SSense. Their interest in working with me is a reminder that follow count doesn’t matter as much as genuine content and conversion.
My best piece of advice is to not worry about the numbers, be genuine, and post what you feel your followers will relate to.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
Instagram and word of mouth! I post screenshots of client feedback and I think that helps build confidence in a new potential client who is on the fence about booking me.
