We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meredith May a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meredith, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you walk us through some of the key steps that allowed you move beyond an idea and actually launch?
I have always loved an excuse to celebrate! As a child, I would watch my grandmother and mother plan and host over the top home parties and do it all themselves- from the cooking to the decorating and everything in between. The way they transformed a room, creating a festive atmosphere, made me feel magical. But it wasn’t until years later, when a friend asked me to help with her child’s birthday party and saw my first balloon garland that I had the realization that with my background in corporate events coupled with my flair for serving others this could be my career.
I was a corporate event professional turned stay at home mom, but I missed creating something magical through events. With some late night chats with my husband and dreaming up what could be, I prayed a lot, sketched out business options, names, and a plan. But turning this dream into reality meant more than just admiring balloons; it required a deeper dive into the world of balloon décor. The first step was to find out if my idea had the potential to grow into a viable business. I spent days researching the balloon décor market in Celina/Prosper, TX, attending local events, and searching social media for trends and inspiration. I discovered a thriving industry, with wedding planners, event coordinators, and party hosts all turning to balloon decorators to create custom designs.
It wasn’t just about basic balloon bouquets anymore. People wanted arches, columns, backdrops, even entire balloon walls. And I saw an opportunity. But I also noticed that the competition was strong and the barrier to entry was low. To stand out, I would need to offer something unique—something creative, high-quality, and personal. Thankfully my background in corporate events allowed me to have an edge and insight that can only be gained with experience.
As I honed my skills, I practiced with friends and family, creating mock-ups of my designs for parties and gatherings. I experimented with different balloon materials, like foil and biodegradable latex, and soon, I had a portfolio of designs that showcased my new ability.
I also realized that to truly succeed, I needed to stand out from the crowd. I envisioned a service that would not only offer gorgeous balloon designs but also provide top-notch customer service and allow clients to enjoy their events instead of running around planning. The personal touch would be my trademark: from initial consultations to the final installation, I would be there every step of the way, ensuring my clients’ visions came to life perfectly.
Then came the first big test. I had secured a corporate client event as my first paying gig. The client had requested two stunning balloon garlands for the entryway and clusters of bright balloons to accent their photo op signage. I spent weeks planning the designs, choosing the perfect color scheme, and preparing every detail. The day of the event arrived, and it was showtime.
I arrived early, setting up the garlands and arranging the balloon clusters with precision. Later that night, I received a glowing review. The experience solidified my belief that not only could I dream it but actually execute it.
Today, I am so grateful that my business is growing. I still take the time to personally consult with each client and ensure every event is magical, and now I am working on scaling the business to allow it be sustainable for years to come.
For me, the journey from an idea to a flourishing balloon décor business has been an exciting ride. What started as a spark of inspiration—helping a friend with her child’s birthday party—became a creative business that blends design, customer service, and the joy of celebration. Looking back, I am proud to have turned my passion into a career, one balloon at a time.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Color Wonder Balloons was born from a simple, powerful idea: to help people celebrate well. In a world that often feels weighed down by challenges, I envisioned a business that could offer a spark of joy during life’s sweetest moments. It’s been my heart’s delight to create spaces of happiness, where the beauty of a well-designed balloon display can lift spirits and bring people together in celebration.
The business officially came to life in May of 2022, just over the weekend of Mother’s Day. It felt like the perfect time — a weekend dedicated to love, family, and honoring the people who bring light into our lives. Combining my professional background in events with my passion for spreading joy, Color Wonder Balloons was founded with a mission: to not just create stunning balloon art and décor, but to remind others where true joy lies — in connection, celebration, and the moments that matter most.
I’ve had the privilege of serving corporate clients, local festivals, and community members for their most treasured celebrations. Each event, no matter the size, is an opportunity to bring a little more joy into the world through color, creativity, and careful attention to detail. I specialize in balloon sculptures such as gingerbread houses, school buses, basically, anything that you see in life can be made into a design with balloons.
As the business grows, the heart of Color Wonder Balloons remains the same: it’s not just about balloons; it’s about sparking joy that lasts a lifetime. With every design, I look forward to continuing this journey of celebration, one balloon at a time.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a creative who owns a balloon business is the ability to transform ordinary moments into extraordinary experiences. There’s something truly magical about seeing the joy on a client’s face when they witness their vision come to life through your work.
For me, the creative freedom that comes with balloon décor is also deeply fulfilling. Every event offers a new challenge, allowing me to push my artistic boundaries and try fresh, innovative designs. From intricate balloon arches to stunning installations, every project feels like a chance to explore new possibilities while bringing a sense of wonder to life.
Moreover, owning a balloon business allows me to play a part in people’s most cherished memories. It’s not just about decorating a venue with balloons—it’s about contributing to an atmosphere of joy and celebration that people will remember for years to come. Being able to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives by adding a spark of joy to their special occasions is what truly makes it all worthwhile.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My creative journey is deeply rooted in my mission to serve others with excellence. As a person of faith in Jesus, I’ve always been inspired to prioritize service—both in personal relationships and professional endeavors. For me, creativity is a way to bring joy to others, a gift that I’m privileged to share. Every step of this journey is an opportunity to grow, connect, and make a meaningful impact. Whether it’s through lessons learned, opportunities seized, or friendships formed, I remain deeply grateful for however long this path unfolds under the Lord’s guidance.
